Q: What's really going on with North Korea?

Does anyone really think they are dumb enough to attack ANY country?  Any attack would result in their immediate and sudden demise.  My wife's uncle is a colonel in the PLA air force and he openly admitted that the DPRK is a major pain in the ass for China and at one time a few years ago even China wanted their government to implode.  Unless North Korea is attacked first, I cannot see China giving more than lip service if NK sinks a boat or launches a missile.

Nobody gives a rats ass any more about North Korea until they open there doors to the business world.  Right now they are like the kid who cried "Wolf" one too many times.

Reportedly, China has a plan in place to claim North Korea as part of China (historical precedent) should the current dynasty collapse. The Chinese do not want it to be part of a unified Korea under any circumstances.

Hopefully, the plan to claim North Korea doesn't also include claiming South Korea.

nevermind:

SK would kick their ass. People don't realize SK has a hell of a good army

Interesting... why not? I mean, any particular reason for not wanting re-unification?

Traveler:

China's reasons for anything are usually obscure and non-sensical. Perhaps it is because they have the belief that South Korea actually WANTS reunification, so China should seeks to create difficulties.

It is not so clear whether South Korea wants reunification.

It could also be a first step towards China claiming all Korea. Who knows how China thinks? Similarly, if China were to get control of the Senkakus, I think they would use that as justification for claiming the Ryukyus as well.

How do you mean?

Right now: N. Korea has declared itself under marshal law. The theory forwarded by most of the reports I've read is that they are getting ready to do another nuclear test. Afterwards China will drag Dear Leader up here to Shenyang to ask him whether or not he's gone out of his mind, as they periodically did with his father. They won't tell anybody when this is going on, but we'll know when it happens because it'll make traffic extra heavy and the city's taxi drivers will bitch about it to anyone that will listen.

In the last few years: a hidden famine, according to reports of cannibalism, and city sized prison camps, according to Google maps.

Korea will go the same way as Germany...in the not too distant future, the war will be officially declared over (remember, it still hasn't finished - we're only under a 'cease-fire'... for 60 years!), and not too long after, the 2 countries will be re-united.

Pegasus:

I really don't think China would allow any reunification as they want to keep that buffer zone between a western ally, just as they would do everything possible to keep Mongolia between them and Russia.  Sadly reunification is a pipe dream of the West and it will not happen peacefullyy - if at all.
