Any ideas or knowledge on this?
12 years 15 weeks ago in Teaching & Learning - China
in my local environment I have seen many requets for Spanish teachers, and a few for French, German and Russian teachers. So, based on that limited experience, I would say Spanish.
In my experience French. I'm currently having to turn down multitudes of offers to teach French, and even after explaining that my French is actually quite poor, most of them are still pretty persistent.
Also, I've met French foreign teachers actually teaching French at a good salary, something I've never seen for any other non-English language.
In my area, besides English, many students are taking Korean and Japanese.
Most of my students have a lot of interest in French.
Has to be Japanese, its the only other one that is taught as a degree in most universitys along with English.
In Guilin i had two friends who asked me to teach them spanish. Same here in Beining, I have a freind who practices spansih with me once a week.
I would say Japanese, because at this college, Business English majors have a Japanese class, and the only other language taught here is English.
In Canada they say: "If you ain't Dutch, you ain't much" - So at least, speak the language - or marry one!

Funny - I thought they said 'there ain't no such word as "ain't"???
kchur:
Yes, Mattaya, if there's one thing about people from Carolina, it's that they don't say "ain't".
Apart from the Asian languages of Japanese and Korean which are very popular, especially Japanese; I would have to say it's French....
It shouldn't really be, it should be Spanish seeing as that's the third most spoken language in the world, yet in Chinese female logic (it's mostly females learning foreign languages 80/20 % ratio approx) French is 'romantic', so therefore it's a language they 'should/would like to' learn!?
If you tell them they'll do well in many African countries then, they scruch their noses up. Not quite what they had in mind I think
Korean Would have to be up there , kpop is taking over...
While I tend to agree, at my last university, the English majors needed a 2nd language, and the options were Japanese or German, with many heading for German. But, I also know a few going for a Master's degree who needed another language, and French seemed to be winning out there.
Japanese and Korean are the second most popular and studied language in China.

Russian and Japanese up here in Heilongjiang.

Yes, here in the north some universities have Russian as a major and it is important for the cities since they hold lots of business with the big neighbor.
