Q: What's the seediest Chinese city you've been to?

I've been to Beijing, Shenzhen and a few other places. I would have to say out of those Chinese cities the seediest place was Beijing. Depends on what you mean by seeding, but Beijing is just big and there is more seeds here than the other cities I've traveled to.

Pretty much all Chinese cities are good for planting seeds, especially if they are imported.

I heard Dongguan is pretty seedy because of all the dodgy KTV places that double up as brothels.

I haven't been to many places in China but of those I've been to I'd have to say Yangshuo is the seediest / tackiest. I would liken it to Blackpool off season with the tasty bits removed!

Then again I haven't been to Yangshuo for 9 years.

NiceBrice:

Why was it the seediest/tackiest? I was really excited to go biking around there.

Everything was REALLY cheap and of extremely poor quality, including the food and hotels but especially the 'souvenirs' which were on sale every 10yards, you could and would see drunks all times of the day or night and had to take care where you stepped to avoid puddles of vomit. Now, I've spoken to some people who have been there more recently and apparently now it is one huge open brothel with prostitutes on every corner! (I suppose that got rid of the souvenir sellers who were selling childrens toys, but then again maybe not )

Having said all that, the natural scenery is quite stunning.

That sucks! I had no idea that it was a big party town. I'm assuming that it gets better though once you're outside of the main city in the natural parts though? As long as those parts are still beautiful, I'll put up with the drunks and brothels. Thanks for the info!

If your idea of drinking over priced booze until you puke and buying overpriced trinkets is your idea of a good time, than Yangshuo is Heaven on Earth.

Never was much into the "frat-boy party" mentality, even when I was in college....

Shunde in Guangdong province. It's been a while but back in 2006 there were so many prostitutes...absolutely loads of them lining the streets. It also had quite a "druggie" feel to it.

Sidicas:

HAHA~

I'm in Shunde now..  Right before the Chinese new year, there were a lot of prostitutes out and about..   On my street, there were at least a dozen..  Haven't seen any for a while though, but I don't go out at night much and I have a fiance.

Changsha. The level of seediness in plain sight is perhaps not as much as in other places. However, each day when you get back to your hotelroom the door will be difficult to open because of the giant pile of business cards from all the business girls. And downtown there are some hotels with in-hotel KTVs that have cars like Lexus & Audi, in Police livery parked outside. Good to see the police bosses are helping keeping the economy going.

It depends on your definition of seediness.  If you mean sleazy then pretty much every city will have areas that fit the bill.

But having been to both Shunde and Dongguan many times I must confer with others above...Dongguan is far and away the hooker and drug capital of China...and Shunde is not far behind.

Coming from Shenzhen I would have to agree Dongguan is quite a dive, but I have another candidate and  that is the Chicken Exchange capital of  China ...its name is Yi Wu. That is where they move all the hookers through from north to south and vice versa (no pun intended)... It makes Dongguan seem like a church picnic.

I think Dongguan is taking the first prize in this thread. Especially Changping town. Anybody been through there? I remember back when I first started working in HK, my boss once told me about this place called Dongguan where- in his own words- "Every day hundreds of young virgin girls from the countryside gets off the train in Dongguan looking for a fresh start. And every night you can find those same girls willing to do anything you want at a reasonable price." Seriously, the guy said this...

Some time later I did go to DG on several occasions, I don't know if his statement is 100% accurate, but it is one GD SEEDY PLACE and I am a conservative person. cool

Most girls go to Dongguan looking for real work in a factory, but they quickly find it is a shitty job, with endless hours and no benefits.  Most don't choose to go into sex work, but are usually enticed or convinced by their "friends" to try something new, and because the work in the factories is so brutal, having booze, sex, drugs and hanging out with rich clients doesn't seem so bad as a 7 day 14 hour a day work schedule endlessly building phone parts.

Dongguan is obviously seedy, but I also believe Guanzghou has many many seedy areas as well, but it is not as obvious as Dongguan where you see massage parlors next to schools.  Everywhere I go I see business cards on the ground to rent sexy women, business hotels advertising price by the hour, there are always *ahem* "business" workers in the subway dressed in mini-skirts and heavy makeup, and there are always recruiting agents stopping pretty girls to offer them a great opportunity for work, if they come with them alone, of course.  My girlfriend has been stopped numerous times by these people when she is alone. I'd love to do an undercover investigation of where those recruiters will lead somebody like her, I am pretty sure girls that get recruitedhere end up working in KTV's around town for 1 or 2 nights, or kidnapped to another city.
