Q: What's the weirdest thing you've eaten that turned out to be delicious?

I used to be all about trying new "crazy" foods in China but after a few years my appetite for this has diminished somewhat. I must say, though, shredded dried squid is much, much better than I would have expected and have actually started to prefer it to beef jerky. Also duck blood soup was pretty tolerable, though I probably wouldn't order it again unless I was trying to impress a girl. What's your personal "hey this isn't so bad" food?

Donkey meat! I wouldn't eat it again because I felt so guilty after eating it, but I can't deny that it was very tasty!

I loved horse meat, nice and gamey without being too tough.

Ostrich egg was different, enjoyably so.

One food I dislike 'differently' to most people is Durian (the fruit) I don't mind the smell, (I don't love it but don't mind it) but don't like the taste, most people are the opposite.

manasyt:

Love durian :) Its a love it or hate it thing....its too expensive in China...ate oodles of it in Philippines & Malaysia:)

Chickens' heart.

In the west, this went into the bin every time. I wouldn't have dreamt of eating one. I reluctantly tried one in China and I am quite taken by it now. Often eat it in small restaurants near my office.

use to eat cabrito (goat) down in Mexico. grilled over coals...  i thought that tasted better than it sounded....

Hugh.G.Rection:

Had goat in Cyprus, it was cooked in a clay oven in foil and they cooked it for hours (typically 12 - 24), when it was eaten you could suck the meat off the bone.............Kleftiko, that was the name of it!

dharma86, that's a good point.

Strange food I've eaten and enjoyed, probably doesn't come any stranger than a very common UK breakfast food Black Pudding, which is basically dried blood!

Pig brains.  My friend didn't tell me what it was when she took me out to eat hot pot,  but after eating and finding how delicious it was, I thought how vaguely familiar it looked and asked her.   I would eat it again if I had a chance.

China is pretty similar to Eastern Europe as far as 'weird' foods - hearts, brains, kidneys, tongue...had it all before coming here...

Definitely some sea creatures here in Xiamen...dont even know the names LOL.

Sea cucumber is one...
