There was a thread recently about good customer service people have had. How about the flip side, what are some of the problems you've ran into in regards to poor customer service while in China. I'm sure there must be some really amazing stories for people to share.
I can't really pick one incident cause there's been so many. One that comes to the top of my head though was the lock on my door broke. Called the landlord to come fix it and they removed the entire door from the hinges and just left. I went from having a broken lock to having no door at all. We kept calling them everyday and they always said they were too busy to do anything. It took a week before we finally had a door, it was the same exact door they just put a new door knob on it haha!
What are some of your stories? One thing that always bothers me is when I'm at a store and I have my hand out to receive my change and they just slam my money on the table. This happens to me at least 3-4 times a week. It drives me crazy. Some of the people that do this are actually very nice, they just lack the knowledge of knowing how rude this can come across to people I think.
The money smacked on the table thing is just a cultural thing, in China it's not a rudeness, so don't take it personally. I do have a story for you though. About 6 years ago I was in Liuzhou, a city where foreigners were VERY few and far between. I went out one day to buy a bread knife and in some back street, thought i'd found the place. It was empty except for a girl of about 17 who I walked up to and asked in Chinese, "Do you have any knives?" She looked at me with something not far removed from abject terror, and I asked again, "A knife, I need a knife. A big one. Do you sell knives?" To which she started backing up, but by this time I was beginning to get a little annoyed, so I started miming a stabbing motion (not the wisest move) as I once again asked, "DO YOU HAVE ANY LARGE KNIVES? I WANT TO BUY A LARGE KNIFE. KNIFE. KNIFE! KNIFE!! KNIFE!!! At which point she turned and fled out of the back door. So I turned and left. And yeh, as I was leaving I saw that they did in fact have some large bread knives, just like I was after. But nobody to sell me one.
ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ...what a story you have..I wills send this story to some comedy director/producer..
Haier, Bought a Haier computer 8000 rmb/yuan/quai from the retailers Suning. After a few days the case /housing had started to crack at both sides and the also the rear of the lid. The computer had only be used twice, it seemed the hinges were too tight. When I returned to the store suddenly know one could speak or understand English. New day I returned with a friend who clearly explained the situation. I found myself dealing with 8 store members all bla la bla at the same time. [headache coming on] In the end they ask that I pay 1000 rmb/yuan/quai to replace the case, my friend reminded them that the computer was only 4-5 days only with no signing of knocks dents or abuse, and that it should carry a 12 months warrenty. The store totally refused to comply. So I casually just trashed it in front of everyone. The same thing happened with an Oppo MP4 after one month it frozen, and would not shut down, once again the store refused to repair or replace, stating I had put downloaded too much music onto it, 90 songs onto a 32gb MP4!!!!!. In Zhangjiagang I went to a watch repair store, to have a battery replaced, 180 yuan/rmb/quai for a battery, I went nuts, and they refused to return the watch unless I paid. Questioning as to why the battery was so expensive, the rely was it is a special battery , not China make, and it will last two [2] yes 2 years, wow at home the battery will last 3 years and cost 30rmb/yuan/quai. And once again not a back street store.

My first time back home:
After a couple of years in China, I went back home. Guilin does not have "Subway" (the sandwitch place) so I decided to buy one. Not being very hungry, I ordered it on "Deli Bread". The shopkeeper glared at me and went to the next person.
Annoyed, I pointed out that I was first in line. But he ignored me. I called the manager and we began to argue and eventually I found out that they had discontinued the deli-size bread a few years before and that he did not appreciate my sense of humor. I explained that I did not know that since I had just gotten back from China.
Security escorted me out.
I now carry a copy of my Chinese School Id.

Subway has security? Most of the Subway's around where I live in the US are run by little old Indian dudes....
110 was my worst ever..........called them to help me out when my bank card refused to get out of the ATM but they just asked me to come back on the morning and ask the bank workers to give it to me..........How stupid was that?
lokethebloke:
How stupid were you? Emergency phone numbers are just that, for emergencies
GuilinRaf:
Um, as your girlfriend can tell you, 110 is for when you see a crime happening or if you are the victim of a crime AND are still in danger.

tried to change city my account registered in. what a bleedin' hassle. I ended up closing the account.
Papa John's Pizza. Waited an hour for a Hawaiian pizza. They served it cold, like it had been sitting on the counter for 20 minutes and they forgot about it. Then they brought the appetizers after the pizza.
bought a phone, then discovered its just a mere copy, its not a phone, but a sample
so many stories I have a lot lot lot of them, just being cheated for being a laowai
Been accused of not paying the right amount at a fast food restaurant. The reason it was odd was because they accused me of not paying the right amount, but I still got my food. Now how does that make any sense if they said I didn't pay. So do they just give out discounts on meals or something. No I did pay the lady couldn't count properly.
Also, been accused of stealing. Asked what I stole they couldn't name it. SO ... again they looked like fools . . . trying to play police man/woman.
Just bought new shoes recently. The guy has a bad attitude. Puts my shoe in the corner in a box. My significant other pays and comes back with the ticket. He doesn't go and get it. He's already looking pissed off like it's his home or something and he's acting like he can act however way he wants. I'm confused so I go there get my shoes and walk out the store. fck'ng dummy needed to learn some manners!
I went to a game place. Damned machine took my coin. I went to get tech support. The guy was trying to help this other prick comes over and says something whispers and they both walk away. I believe he was saying he's a foreigner let's go. I got a chinese guy to help me explain what happened and got my refund. Next time that dude gave me a bad look I'd look in his eye and stare him down.
I always experience outstanding service, primarily because they follow me around to make sure I don't steal anything!
I guess I appear poor or dishonest. Either way I believe this proves I need a raise!
Do street vendors count? I've watched them drop food on the ground, pick it up and throw it back in with the rest right in front of customers. I saw another one blow his nose into his hand without a tissue or glove and go right back to serving food again.
I recently went to dinner at a thai restaurant with another American friend. When we got there, they didn't have 90% of the things on the menu, and charged us an arm and a leg for bowls of rice. Final bill was nearly 200 RMB, and the food portions were abysmally low.
The food didn't taste that good either. I went to this restaurant before, by myself, and got about the same amount of food for 116 RMBm and it tasted better. But as soon as 2 foreigners were there, you could see the mao signs in their eyes.
"Let's give them shit service, and charge them extra!"
We ordered 4 plates: 24, 32, 32, 26 rmb each. 114 RMB becomes 189 RMB. Horray for people without a conscience.
There are simply too many instances to name. Honestly, if you care to try, you will find at least one example of unacceptable customer service everyday.
I am sure I have experienced worse, but what comes to mind is a pizze-hut-esque restaurant by my office.
I often find it hard to get a waitress' attention when I am ready to order, probably because they think it might be difficult due to language barrier (or because they assume I have no fingers to point at the picture menu with?).
After I do get my order of soup, salad, and spaghetti in, I always get the noodles first, and about ten mins later the salad, and then a few later the soup. In this case, when I say they are backwards, I mean it in a literal sense.
icnif77:
Chinese eat soup in the end of the meal. Maybe, you should write your order, and time it: soup at 1.10pm, salad at 1.21pm.....noodles at 1:37
Nessquick:
Yes, anywhere same, want to enjoy soup ( borsch ) and than a steak, but they give me steak first and soup long time after steak is cold :( even told them 3 times, and make sure give me soup first ...
