Q: What's the worst job you've seen here?

I remember back in London seeing people standing in the street holding signs that said 'Golf Sale' (I still don't know what that means) and I thought that was pretty bad. "What do you do for a living?" "I'm a sign-post." That sucks. But in Liuzhou I regularly saw girls standing outside shops clapping their hands endlessly to draw attention to the shops. You could pass one on your way somewhere and see the same girl still at it on your way back an hour later. Of course, the guy in the news section of this site who gets spat at for a living probably takes the prize, but at least he's original, and something of a conceptual artist when you think about it. I guess if he was really entrepreneurial he'd do it whilst holding a sign and clapping his hands. You know, really go for the big money.

So.........what's the worst you've seen, or done yourself?

Some of the cleaning jobs are really messy. Like the guys who pick up trash at our local market. That is stinky beyond anything I've ever seen. And the containers the garbage is in is always overloaded and it's juicy. Bird feathers, rotting meat, dead rats, seafood that's been baked in the sun since the day before. I hope these guys gets a decent salary, but doubt it.

Trash collectors do have a hard time of it in this country, which is why I always put a nice shiny penny inside every condom I throw out. You know, just to take the edge off.

well,,, this might be hard to believe,,,, and probably should not be discussed in Polite Society,,,,,   but,,,,  there is a job in chinar where they bring a big truck and like suck the waste from toilets.  maybe not explaining well...  there are public toilets that are not on the 'plumbing system'.  the waste is just held in a tank.  these tanks need to be emptied.  there are crews who go around with these special trucks and basically suck the contents of these tanks up into another tank on the truck.  what they do with it next?  my guess is discharge it into a fish farm or maybe a pig farm.

enjoy your next meal.

ambivalentmace:

yes, we call it a septic tank system in the states for those who want to live away from society but the truck usually charges a lot of money to haul it away,

very bizarre to have septic systems in the city with all the great infrastructure, probably another way to keep every one employed.

Hakupatasa:

cycle of life...first eat the pig..then feed the pig....again eat the pig

a joke i make during group dinner if we have leftover food. "Don't worry about the food. Even if we don't finish, leftover goes to a pig so as the food that we just ate. No matter what, i.e. inside or outside, both will be served during next dinner as a fresh pig. Voila! Nothing wasted and the cycle goes on!"

There are too many bad jobs here. I feel sorry for the builders who look like they're in their 70s and work hard labour for 12+ hours in the day all year round. I also feel sorry for the rubbish lady who empties the bins in the xiao qu every morning in all weather. Or the coal miners who cut 20-30 years off their life just to earn 2000 rmb a month to support their families.

mArtiAn:

My mother-in-law worked 15 hour days for 35 years without a day off. Can you believe that? It's true. I work a 20 hour week and complain about it. Haha. I have no shame.

Standing on your own private platform in the middle of a huge crossroads to regulate the traffic with an abundance of traffic lights doing exactly the same.
