Q: what's your plan if you're working at a training center?

Hello everyone!

I am a teacher at a training center now. But, after the new regulations, I don't think training centers will be there for long. So what should we do in this case?

Ps: my school says it's not possible to trasnfer to a kindergarten. I will have to leave China if I want to work somewhere else. But the big problem is no one knows when China will open its borders.

If you are a native speaker, currently hold a Z visa, and have a degree then there is no reason why you cannot change to a kindergarten, primary or even a lower tier international school.

It could be that your current employer is right but I wouldn't trust anyone that was in charge of a training center or the HR of any training center. It could be that they simply don't want to do the paperwork or that they want to make sure you stick around until they no longer have any use for you.

I wouldn't finish my contract as your loyalty will probably not be rewarded. If I were you I'd start looking for jobs immediately. Give them the required amount of notice. Right now there are a lot of desperate schools that will hire just about anyone.

The problem is that my boss says it's the policy in this province. They no longer provide work permits for us. And, if we want to transfer, we cannot do so. So I am really nervous and stuck right now. My work permit is valid till January 2022.

There is nothing to be stuck by. You have to be flexible ... It looks like 'game is over' with laowai English teaching in China.

Apply elsewhere, in other provinces. You'll get an answer about the possibilities of an employment ...

In the same time apply out of China, too and ready yer bags for the move.

I'd say, if boss said no WP anymore in your province, it will be the same all around China.

I had a similar feelings in June, 2017, when Chinese stopped employing non-native English passport holders. I was there 8-years always working legally (Z/RP), but I had to pack in a hurry and exit China. I wasn't stuck by anything.

Have you talked to agents/recruiters? I don't think it's over for teachers in China. Training centers are kaput but there are hundreds of positions available right now and schools are desperate. If you need assistance then you can send me a personal mesage on this platform and I can link you up with an agent that will most likely be able to get you a job. I wouldn't believe your boss.

You can exit China ... you cannot enter without vax. certificate ..

I ain't in China, but ... look for similar/same job adverts elsewhere ... anywhere in S. Asia or anywhere around the world, if you hold native English passport.

Other countries aren't any different than China considering English speaking foreigner, who doesn't speak country's native language.

Make your CV ready and apply ...

... and the last pack-yer-bags motion ..

Good luck!

As a general rule, you should never take anything said to you by an employer here at face value.  The amount of excuses made to get away with laziness is mind-boggling.

What is your job title?  Provided that you get hired somewhere with the same job title, you should have no problem getting a new WP at a KG/primary school. It seems like all I see are ads for KG/primary school teachers, so it's doubtful that they're not giving out WPs anymore.

As you have already been told, don't believe what your boss told you until you have done your job to find a kindergarten or a school ready to hire you. China is too big a country to not need anymore foreign teachers. "Lazy" is the right atribute to your boss and all those bosses who claim that there is nothing left for their foreign employees.

One thing that you should be familiar with is that an employer will never agree that you be able to move to another one. It's a loss of faith. It doesn't matter the great terms you partying with your boss to another employer.  It is still a loss of face. That has been largely discussed on this forum. Their laziness goes hand in hadn with evilness and they  will not shy away to lie and cheat on you just to see you out of China should you look for another employer as an alternative.

YOu won't see kind and honest emplyers in China. You will meet only employers who will treat you as "you are my property" just they way, one employer at a kindergarten I have worked at, told me. Certainly, you won't find it mentioned in your contract. It is an unwritten law that frames the same mentality of a slave holder and master.

Follow the advices Kiwi Teacher and Arachnoid Boenz told you as well as icniff-ism's wisdom and do your job, be courageous, use your time you have on your hand, make aquaintances and "friends" from another schools and kindergartens and see what life has in store for you. Don't take for "this is it" what your boss told you. Most importantly, as you've been told "be water, my friend, be water!", meaning, be flexible and ready to navigate landscapes of opportunities in other provinces. All the best!

Chaos is coming, those poor kids of party officials who will never learn English, what a tragedy!

icnif77:

It's going to be " .. my guanxi is better than yer ... guanxi ..."

Am the guanxi KingKong ... from Hong Kong ...

I could be a poet ...

Funny, but the most who get hurt by this Chinese prohibition aren't Chinese, but foreigners (native English teachers) working online from anywhere in the world ...

A: "... through ..."?  Only "through" comes to mind is "Shenzhen agent can connect you with an employer, who's authorized to hire waigouren ... and can sponsor Z visa." It's not like every 10th person you meet in Shenzhen's hood can sponsor work visa ...  The only way to change from student to labourer visa is just a regular way by: 1. Finding an employer, who'll apply for an Invitation letter; 2. Exit China and apply for Z visa in your home country's Chinese embassy; 3. Enter China in 30-days after Z visa was stamped into your travelling instrument ...As I am aware, you won't be able to switch to Working permit by remaining in China....,so make ready for a return to your home .... -- icnif77
