Q: When is the best season for traveling across China?

My guess is China is a huge country and there is a lot to be seen and done, but I also know that there are things that can spoil traveling. The heat is a pretty big killer but dadgum snow aint far behind it. I guess it's probably pouring over there in some places too.  Anyway does that mean spring and fall?  I saw somewhere that a lot of tourist sites are full of stair steps and I am definitely not going to be climbing steps when I go over.   Any sightseeing advice from the travel savvy crowd?

There is no single answer for this as China is big with several different climates.  Summer is insufferably hot almost everywhere.  In the middle winter is cold and wet and in the north cold and skin cracking dry, neither are pleasant.  Winter in the south can be nice.  So if you want to go all over, spring and autumn will be the best time.  Although one slightly strange thing about the Chinese climate is spring and autumn seem to be very short.  It can go from freezing cold to hot, in just a few weeks.  No idea why.

The number 1 travel tip I would give is get away from the crowds.  China has many pretty places, and almost all of them ruined by huge numbers of people who generally behave in an unpleasant Chinese way.  Getting away from them is easier said than done and might depend on your language skill, but if you can do it, its well worth it.  But defiantly don't travel during the holidays, and if possible even avoid weekends.

BHGAL:

good response, impossible  question....China is big, real big. Tropical and practically Arctic. Mongolia to Tibet, Hainan to Shanghai to Harbin. Urumqi to Chengdu to Kunming. Never go to "popular" spots on weekends or holidays. Never travel when others are travelling...bottom line, stay home.

No, it is not that bad, bring your patience, understanding, practice your squats early and I hope you enjoy this rather odd yet wonderful, gigantic metropolis.

As mentioned, short spring and autumn.

I live in north west Xinjiang and it snowed here in April this year.  Before that month was out the temp had reached 30.  That's pretty amazing, I reckon.

How long do you plan to travel?  I think any itinerary should depend on how much time you have.

Avoid times when the whole country is on holiday.  That's mainly for the month of Spring Festival (late Jan to late Feb, depending on the moon) and the first week of October.

Think twice about a river cruise.

That really depends on where you want to visit, and what you plan on doing.

Overall, I would say that Eastern, BHGAL, and Royce are all correct.

Avoid summer and winter.

I would say during Spring time. A little after Spring Festival and before May Day holiday.

This way you miss most of the holiday rush.

Summer is the best time go to to the west for me,such as Tibet,Qinghai,Yunnan, west Sichuan, the climate actually is quite comfortable, not too hot not too cold, but there is a temperature difference in the day time and evening, you can wear summer clothes in the day time but might need thick jacket in the evening, btw, the day is very long in summer, especially in Tibet there is a time difference,it gets dark at 8:00pm.
