Here's a free lesson in planning holidays in China.

1. Remember, the time you want to go on holidays is the same time 87 million Chinese want to do the same thing.
2. Unlike in our own country, last minute holiday bookings here DO NOT WORK. Everything is booked out, trains, planes, automobiles (Sounds like a good movie title!)
3. Buy tickets online when you can and remember train tickets are available only 10 days prior to when you want to go. I say buy online but if you can't do that then get a Chinese friend to go to the ticket box with you. Tickets are "more" available to nationals than to foreigners. It's a fact of life - learn to live with it.
4. If you plan a trip coinciding with Chinese New Year then there are 110 million Chinese planning trips home. Reference: Chinese movie Last Train Home.
5. Learn to push in queues - it's not rude it's survival and acceptable behaviour.
6. Trains and buses are popular compared to planes but having said that I can't remember travelling in China on a partially empty aircraft.
7. Best deals to fly out of China: farecompare.com

Have a good trip.
