'China could see 2 million deaths': Covid havoc in Chinese cities

Emergency wards in China's small cities and towns southwest of Beijing are overwhelmed. AP reported that China is grappling with its first-ever national Covid-19 wave, with millions of cases. The ICUs are turning away ambulances, relatives of sick people are searching for open beds. Patients are slumped on benches in hospital corridors and lying on floors for a lack of beds.

Anger mounts over Zero-Covid policy, protests break out in Beijing, Shanghai

Tiananmen Square 2.0: Protesters Demand Xi Jinping Step Down

Yesterday's protest with people chanting:

"No dictatorship, we want democracy. We don't need a dictator, we want voting rights."

These slogans were shouted loudly and openly on the street in Shanghai. This is unprecedented. What's next? Will authorities arrest and announce stricter social control laws?

Narrator: " ... as of Saturday night protests happened in 13 Chinese cities and around 80 Chinese Universities ...,"

Chinese social media is blocked with signal jammers ... Weibo and Wechat went dark ...

Reasons for the latest protests all around China was the fire in Urumqi, Xinjiang, where 10 people (3 kids) died because rescuers were unable to access the fire site 'cause of the 0-Cofid restrictions and lockdown ...

Chinese people have enough of forceful restrictions ...

Guangzhou riot police in full gear in white colour (LOL at the colour ...), helmets and shields trying to stop crowd hurling up large stones and bottles at the cops ... Arrested taken away handcuffed with black mesh over the eyes ...

This looks much more violent than the latest HK democracy protests ...

China’s Mysterious Vaccination Failure

Why did the Communist government fail to inoculate so many of its seniors?

China is suffering its worst coronavirus outbreak of the entire pandemic. Despite brutal lockdowns that have seriously disrupted the food supply in Shanghai and caused a huge pileup of ships outside the city’s port, the virus is still spreading rapidly in the city.

It seems that a combination of bad luck and poor decisions, especially a failure to vaccinate its elderly, has left the Chinese government with a choice between a tsunami of death and massive social unrest—and it might end up getting both.

The main problem, as I covered previously, is that the omicron variant is so incredibly infectious (arguably the most contagious virus in human history) that it has crushed Zero COVID systems around the world. New Zealand, Australia, and Taiwan simply couldn’t stay ahead of new infections, and so cases have exploded in each.

China’s largest city tells schools to hold classes onlineChina’s largest city tells schools to hold classes online

China’s largest city, Shanghai, has asked schools to hold classes online after the lifting of most of the toughest coronavirus restrictions led to a spike in cases in the country.

Primary, middle and high schools are expected to switch to remote learning from Monday, according to Shanghai’s education bureau. Kindergartens and childcare centers in the city of almost 25 million have also been instructed to halt all in-person classes.

China has been pursuing a so-called zero-Covid policy since the first outbreak of Covid-19 in the city of Wuhan in late 2019, with strict lockdowns and widespread testing.

However, last week the curbs were significantly relaxed across the country, causing a spike in case numbers.

China – where infections had been reduced to almost zero earlier this year – reported 2,286 new symptomatic coronavirus cases on Friday, 129 more than on the previous day. National health authorities have stopped announcing asymptomatic cases, as mass testing has been abandoned.

There are fears that Covid-19 could surge across the country’s population of 1.4 billion during next month’s Lunar New Year holiday, when many people in China travel.

"Extremely Irresponsible" China Reopens Borders, Milan Sees 50% Of Arrivals Infected With COVIDteaser image

...will it be xenophobic again to block Chinese visitors?

WED DEC 28, AT 4:47 PM

Bloomberg reports that Italian health authorities will begin testing all arrivals from China for Covid after almost half of the passengers on two flights to Milan were found to have the virus.

Additionally, in Germany, health authorities are “closely watching” the situation in China, according to Health Ministry spokesman Sebastian Guelde.

China's National Health Commission announced on Dec. 26 that the country would end all quarantine requirements for inbound travelers from Jan. 8, 2023.

Travelers will need to obtain a negative PCR test within 48 hours of departure, it said. Currently, travelers entering China need to undergo five days of mandatory quarantine in an approved facility, followed by three days at home.

The health body added that outbound tourism, which plummeted to almost nothing during the pandemic, will resume in an “orderly” fashion.

It also removed the cap on the number of international flights to and from China.

Crucially for the rest of the world, as The Epoch Times reports, data from travel sites show that Chinese residents are rushing to book overseas trips.

Chinese travel platform Tongcheng Travel released data on Dec. 27, showing that the number of searches for visas to go abroad increased by 10 times, and the search volume of international air tickets soared by 850 percent.

Japan, Thailand, South Korea, the United States, Singapore, Malaysia, Australia, and the UK were among the most searched destinations.

Sean Lin, a virologist and former lab director at the viral disease branch of the Walter Reed Army Institute of Research, said that the Chinese Communist Party’s (CCP) opening up of the country is actually a strategy to get everyone infected not only within China, but around the world.

“When they can’t control the outbreak, they push it to the whole world. Just like when COVID first broke out in Wuhan, people who had been infected in Wuhan were allowed to travel around the world. The strategy is the same now as before,” he said.

Lin pointed to the regime’s lack of transparency amid the latest outbreak, a consistent behavior over the past three years during the pandemic.

“The CCP is not sharing data, and the international community doesn’t know how many different virus variants are spreading in China, and whether there are other compound infections,” he said.

“Under such circumstances, it is extremely irresponsible for the CCP to let the people out of the country which is a huge epidemic area. Put another way, it has a very treacherous purpose and is very malicious.”

Bloomberg notes that Italy is now sequencing those tests to see if there are new variants coming from China, the Health Ministry said in a statement. If a new strain is found, officials may impose stricter curbs on travel from China.

“We have no indication that a more dangerous mutation has developed in China that would give rise to a declaration of a virus variant area, which would result in corresponding travel restrictions,” he added.

Finally, the critical question for the world's liberal globalists - will it be xenophobic again to block Chinese visitors?

WHO 'concerned’ on Covid situation in China, calls restrictions by countries ‘understandable’

As more and more countries are imposing restrictions on travellers from China amid the recent surge in cases in the country, Beijing’s state media, called these mandates “discriminatory”. However, the World Health Organization (WHO) chief, on Thursday, called the measures “understandable” given the lack of information from China.

icnif77:

https://www.zerohedge.com/covid-19/china-hit-tsunami-covid-infections-reopening-scramble-its-all-just-omicron-no-new-variants

China Hit By Tsunami Of COVID Infections In Reopening Scramble But It's All Just Omicron, As No New Variants Emerge

First, the bad news: Bloomberg reports that according to Airfinity Ltd., a London-based research firm that focuses on predictive health analytics, China could see as many as 25,000 deaths a day from Covid-19 later in January, casting a shadow over the start of the first Lunar New Year festivities without pandemic restrictions.

Mortalities from the contagious respiratory illness will probably peak around Jan. 23, the second day of the annual holiday in the country of 1.4 billion, Airfinity estimated, adding that daily infections will peak 10 days before at around 3.7 million cases. These numbers are roughly in line with our own calculations.

“Using the trends in regional data our team of epidemiologists has forecast the first peak to be in regions where cases are currently rising and a second peak driven by later surges in other Chinese provinces,” Airfinity said in a statement late on Thursday.

Daily infections are currently at around 1.8 million, with mortalities at 9,000, the researcher said. That’s up from the 5,000-plus daily estimate by Airfinity earlier this month, and contrasts sharply with just around a dozen Covid deaths the Chinese government has reported in total since the dismantling of Covid restrictions in early December. By the end of April 2023, China may see 1.7 million deaths from this wave of infections, Airfinity said.

Airfinity’s estimates are based on data from China’s regional provinces, which had reported numbers far higher than official national figures, combined with trends seen in Hong Kong, Japan and other countries when they lifted strict restrictions, the researcher said. The extent of the latest outbreak has been difficult to gauge after officials abandoned publishing an accurate case count and narrowed their definition of a virus death.

“The variants continue to circulate without any significant changes that raise any specter of concern. You do not have any kind of data that suggest anything but business as usual.”

UK Announces COVID-19 Restrictions On China Arrivalsteaser image

SAT DEC 31, AT 3:30 PM

From Jan. 5, people flying from mainland China to England will be asked to take a pre-departure test taken no more than two days prior to departure, the government announced on Dec. 30.

In addition, the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) will launch new surveillance measures on Jan. 8, which will see a sample of passengers arriving in England from mainland China tested for COVID-19 at the point of their arrival.

The government said the measures have been introduced “due to a lack of comprehensive health information shared by China.”

“If there are improvements in information sharing and greater transparency then temporary measures will be reviewed,” it added.

There are no direct flights from China to Scotland, Wales, or Northern Ireland, but the government said it would be working with the devolved administrations to ensure measures are implemented across the UK.

UK Health Secretary Steve Barclay said: “As COVID cases in China rise ahead of them reopening their borders next week, it is right for us to take a balanced and precautionary approach by announcing these temporary measures while we assess the data. This allows our world leading scientists at the UK Health Security Agency to gain rapid insight into potential new variants circulating in China.”

He reiterated the government’s position that “the best defence against the virus” remains the vaccine, and urged people to come forward for vaccines or boosters.

International Response

A growing list of nations has adopted entry curbs on visitors from China in response to the massive COVID-19 wave sweeping the country on the heels of the Chinese regime’s abrupt lifting of stringent zero-COVID restrictions earlier this month without adequate preparation.

In the first 20 days of December, 248 million people in China likely have become infected, according to an internal meeting memo of China’s top health body that leaked online. The number dwarfs the COVID-19 data and death tally officially released so far, which international experts and evidence on the ground show to be vastly disproportionate to the actual scale of the outbreak.

The U.S. government announced on Dec. 28 that, starting on Jan. 5, all travellers from China will be required to take a COVID-19 test no more than two days before travel and provide a negative test before getting on their flight.

U.S. officials said that the Chinese regime’s lack of transparency during the current outbreak was a key factor for the imposition of the new travel restrictions.

The U.S. entry curbs followed in the footsteps of China’s neighbouring nations and regions such as India, Malaysia, Japan, and Taiwan.

Italy, Spain, and France have also made COVID-19 testing mandatory for people arriving from China.

Italy urged the European Union to follow its lead and test travelers from China, but the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) said on Dec. 29 that it considered “screenings and travel measures on travellers from China unjustified.”

China reports 60,000 COVID-related deaths, says peak passed

BEIJING (AP) — China on Saturday reported nearly 60,000 deaths in people who had COVID-19 since early December, offering hard numbers for an unprecedented surge that was apparent in overcrowded hospitals and packed crematoriums, even as the government released little data about the status of the pandemic for weeks.

Those numbers may still underestimate the toll, though the government said the “emergency peak" of its latest surge appears to have passed.

The toll included 5,503 deaths due to respiratory failure caused by COVID-19 and 54,435 fatalities from other ailments combined with COVID-19 since Dec. 8, the National Health Commission announced. It said those “deaths related to COVID” occurred in hospitals, which means anyone who died at home would not be included in the numbers.

The report would more than double China’s official COVID-19 death toll to 10,775 since the disease was first detected in the central city of Wuhan in late 2019. China has counted only deaths from pneumonia or respiratory failure in its official COVID-19 death toll, a narrow definition that excludes many deaths that would be attributed to COVID-19 in much of the world.

China stopped reporting data on COVID-19 deaths and infections after abruptly lifting anti-virus controls in early December despite a surge in infections that began in October and has filled hospitals with feverish, wheezing patients. Hospitals in Beijing across the country have been overwhelmed with patients, and funeral homes and crematoriums have struggled to handle the dead.

The World Health Organization and other governments appealed for information after reports by city and provincial governments suggested as many as hundreds of millions of people in China might have contracted the virus.

Infection numbers now appear to be falling based on a decline in the number of patients visiting fever clinics, said a National Health Commission official, Jiao Yahui.BEIJING (AP) — China on Saturday reported nearly 60,000 deaths in people who had COVID-19 since early December, offering hard numbers for an unprecedented surge that was apparent in overcrowded hospitals and packed crematoriums, even as the government released little data about the status of the pandemic for weeks.
