Whenever I applied for a residency card, they wanted to see my certificate of residency, which is the document you get from the police department when you register yourself as a local resident.

And in order to get that certificate, you had to show them the lease agreement of the place you were staying.  I am not sure if you need that certificate or not, but if they ask for it, then it would be really hard to register in a different city.

Also, in 6 years, I have only had them stop by my home once to check on me.  If they come to check on you, then it may cause you problems.  You just need to ask yourself if the risk outweighs the hassle of registering the right way.

Maybe it depends on where you are? Unlike Xpat.John, I was never given a certificate of residency, but I got my residency thingmabob anyway. I also never had to show anyone any lease agreement either.

Why lie to the Chinese police?  I would that put one down as truly not a good idea.  I wouldn't go and have tea and crumpets with them but neither would I lie to them, particularly not as a foreigner and particularly not with the current sentiments here.

Dear BHGAL, just recently in the city where I lived one foreign resident was picked up and arrested for something very similar and then subsequently deported.  It caused all the foreigners here serious second thoughts about this kind of behavior.  Mind you -- he claimed to be living in Shandong, in a different province and in a different city and the local police and the local PSB Entry and Exit folk had noted him wandering around this for the last six months or so, with no temporary registration, and voila, now he's back in Kenya or Nigeria or somewhere like that.

Lying is never a good thing. Once they found out you've lied your are in deep $hit!!

The last couple of years, I've just used the Temp Residency slip the police gave me originally when I moved in, and said I was still living there. No real problems...new slip issued

The most recent time for this for me, when I re-entered last September on a new visa, I went to the police, but had forgotten my last slip. But, at the time, there were 2 African students also doing the same thing, but they just handed over a piece of paper with and address and phone number on it. A bit of a discussion, and a phonecall later, and voila! Done!!

I returned later with the old lease, and the old Tem Res slip.... ooh, noooo!!! You can't use this! She rang the landlord, and basically demanded I get a new lease contract! (my landlord is pretty cool! I've been here 2.5 years, and no hassles). So, given this BS (esp from above) I haven't bothered registering...

Yeah, u dont necessarily have to state where u leave, for example, i have had instances where i was moving out of the hostel but hadnt secured an apartment yet and had to do my permit, so i simply told them i was living at the hostel even though i was moving out the next week. Also, there are times when i didnt take my house agreement along and i just told them my house address and landlords phone number. 

Im simply saying you could lie about where you live, people do it all the time, but i suggest you tell the truth just to avoid any troubles especially now that they are getting pretty strict.
