Q: when using TOR browser, do you have to use a vpn or will it work without the extra step?

have freegate, ultra, and dynapass but still have trouble getting tor to work, anybody have some insight for this semi-literate computer novice, many thanks, at least i finally mastered torrents, but what else do i have to do with my time in china, thinking of getting the masters in computer science from georgia tech online for 7000 dollars, its only money and time right.

The Chinese are very, very on to TOR and its series of relays.

Additionally, it is the slowest of all the free VPNs, even if it is the securest.

I won't go into details here.  I am available by PM for more info.

TOR relay adresses are closely monitored, so most of the time unavailable.

Explaining this simply : you need to connect to a remote machine in order to access the TOR network, and all of the "remote machines" adresses that are made public on a regular basis are very quickly banned and blocked.

Short answer : TOR only does not work.

Good, cheap and simple VPNs are available, but like everything else, good stuff don't come for free and I strongly advise you to be ready to pay, otherwise you would most likely either be very limited in bandwidth, or compromise whatever you put on the traffic.

Note : the OpenVPN protocol is also blocked since the holy firewall is able to detect its signature through the packets.

ah yes dear friend but the Canadians have a state-of-the-art workaround that never fails...and that's all I can say here.

and it's free.

If you have 7000 dollars to pay for an online masters, what's 5 dollars a month for a stable, fast VPN?

ambivalentmace:

the five dollar a month vpns have problems also, witopia cost 70 dollars a year and was less reliable than the free ones. if you going to pay for bad service, might as well go for free, if i want bad service and quality, i might as well live in china, oh crap, i forgot, i do live in china. lol

try www.freevpn.cc/vpntunnel

you have 3 vpn server you can just connect by setting up some windows vpn connection. it wont disconnect and the speed is good. Only if you reconnect the password might have changed.

i use it now like 1 year and i really recommend it

@ambi..    Read the response where you shared a  bit about your background, from getting a balanced sheet balanced to building a house to Syria battlefield...... impressive achievements for one life.

For volunteer work, Amity is a reputable one, they regularly organise annual summer English courses, to train local high school English teachers (ie mainlanders). The schools they pick are mostly in remote areas, known for poverty.  But they are also the top tier school in that region, usually named as XYZ yi-chong (one-secondary). Their students are also well brought up.  This means the teachers you will be training are highly respected, many are young and motivated to teach.  Volunteers are highly respected, the locals also don't get paid because it is summer holidays. Virtually everyone writes decent english,  what they need is verbal English brushing up. These folks understand and appreciate your effort, to the extend many cry when you leave,  because they appreciate nobility.

Someone like you who understands leverage, I bet, would find the train the trainer projects attractive.  No worry about the christianity background in case that bothers you (me no christian btw) nobody  talks about the B book or Mr. Y/J   there.    Something for you this summer? They charge you USD 1200, something like that, food and accomodation included, decent, both.

ambivalentmace:

I will definitely check that out, thanks a million. I have 6 weeks this summer available, well one week for the wife's vacation, I think we are doing saipan this year. If i manage to go, i will bring my own coffee. bad experiences with that problem, no Scotch is bearable, but no coffee, not so much.

Just doing my share,  ambi. When you see  the young ones cry, because of what you have done for them, and some say to you, one day they want to be like you, ie do voluntee work, from what little I know of you, I am willing to bet that would be one of your biggest rewards in life. You would feel it. This is the mark of a master teacher who is both teaching and inspiring others.

One door leads to another, it is very likely that you will be led to other worthy projects, which I define as ones that really need your help, AND the ones who are benefitted by it not only appreciate it from the bottom of their heart, but also are so touched by you that they want to carry your torch when given the opportunity. This, is a wise use of leverage imho. The projects are about 3 weeks, after normal school finishes in early July. The majority of the local teachers travel to your school, from the entire region, at their own time and expenses. i.e. motivated. (added: Yes, do bring your own coffee. LOL Tip: ask for somewhere north if you prefer cooler weather. ))

Their PRC HQ is in Nanjing.

tor doesnt work in china

ambivalentmace:

it works on a linux system, but the Chinese can't figure out Linux or use it very well, maybe soon though, they are trying, but very few people outside a tier 1 city actually usually linux so it's not available in most of China. I have gotten Tor to work in Shenzhen and a few other places that I want mention, about 7 cities.
