I stereo type people just as much as anybody
however this is what happened to me one day
I was at a ATM in a area well known as a Chinese shopping district in Brisbane
(Westpac Market place for QLD people)
I made a comment that there was no were to park to the guy(Aussie) behind me and that I doubled parked
He said he did a similar thing and used a Disabled park for his van
then he went to far
The slopes cant drive very well
my reply was if you say that word again you will need that disabled park in the future
he soon realized why when I got back into my Car with my wife and Kids
(I was pissed at the word not the well know ability of Asian drivers)
this sort of thing happened to you or your partners ?
I come from a city that was once listed in the top ten racist places in America, yet they treated my wife with respect and were very polite despite their overall ignorance. One old neighbor of mine asked my wife "So do you speak oriental?" And they were absolutely shocked when they learned my wife graduated from Stanford with her masters degree in Child Psychology. My hometown is no longer in the top ten, but still hate blacks as usual. After my parents passed away, I moved out. In general Americans don't see passive Chinese people as threat, but they will never trust Chinese because of all the IP theft horror stories.
Personally we never had a problem, of course there are racists in every nation, but in the UK they seem to save their bile for the Indian, Pakistani, Black communities, which in no way makes then any less vile, just that we were never a target, (or at least not that we were aware of).
My Filipina girlfriend (in Michigan) used to tell me she was getting looks or that people at other tables in restaurants were talking about us... Other Asians, not the other Westerners, and I never really noticed or kind of thought she was paranoid but then I did start to see. It was usually older Asian people who would be glancing at us then in a flurry of whisper or quiet talk in whatever language. I speak Mandarin, it wasn't usually that. Likely others speaking Tagalog that she could pick up.
I have never heard or seen any other Westerners give us looks or bad mouth us, speak ill of her etc. I think older Asians can be pretty bad about it. None of my younger Asian friends take offense in fact I think they like that I date more Asian women. I don't think I have yellow fever btw, I just had an eye opener after my divorce from a NY Italian woman and a lot of years working in Asia, plus I LOVE that long shiny black hair, LOL.. just preferences toward my own ideals of attractiveness.
The only thing I ever got in Vancouver was when my wife cut in front of a guy getting on the bus. He looked at me the way white people look at each other when an immigrant has done something irritating. I took his side and explained later NOT TO DO THAT HERE>
