Q: When you bump into americans on your travels do they ever tell you that they're Canadian
I travel quite a lot in China and meet my fair share of americans. They ask me where I'm from, I say the UK, I ask them where they come from, some say Canada when it is obvious that they're from the USA. Why do they do this?
I'm Canadian, so I tell people Jianada, Americans, no clue maybe cause they get bad reps. Besides Canadian are way better.
I too am Canadian ..... and yes Americans often impersonate us,,,, pretend they are something they are not ( silly folks)..... ..... truth is though, I can be just as much an a*hole as they and their compatriots are....... another truth, I have met a lot of pretty decent Americans, I really like the southerners, what y'all want for breakfast sugah !!!....New Yorkers ... not so much...... ever been to Wallace Idaho??? great place TED .... I love travel and new experiences!! and I like rambling gibberish!!!
I have never run into this situation. Actually it's the direct opposite: my US friends proudly tell everyone that they are American.
I'm American. I always tell people this. Last night, a clerk at the local RT-Mart claimed he thought I was 英国人, I quickly corrected him...
I have also never met an American who said he was from Canada, no offense intended at all. Yet, locally there are a couple of Canadians who some days claim to be from England, and some days from USA, depending on their mood. In my belief, I do think they do it as a jest, not seriously. In my mind, every man is proud of his country of birth, and of his citizenship.
I hope I can answer this more seriously, I am proud to be North American and a dual citizen but spend most of my time in America and Asia but in my past experience when I had to travel in North Africa, Middle East and Southeast Asia, I would literally wear a Maple Leaf t-shirt and ensure I had a button, pin, tie, didn't matter as long as it showed Canada, I did this for safety and at times was still scared I was going to be beheaded
in China, it seems if you are from America they prefer it, it is stupid actually, I remember in 2008 when I had the chance to meet one of the party members in Beijing; he actually told me quote unquote, George W. Bush was one of strongest leaders ever and likened him to Hitler in a good way. OH YOU CRAZY CHINA, WHERE WHITE PEOPLE LOOK LIKE RUSSIANS AND EVERY OTHER COLOR IS NOT ACCEPTABLE EVEN IF YOU ARE NOT WHITE LOVE TO HATE YOU, HATE TO LOVE YOU. In comparison, does anyone else here find China is like that relationship you couldn't just break off?
