Money, money, money.....as prices keep increasing even for fruits or vegetables....
money is a good answer.... but I think I'm going to vote for guanxi.
though it does take both to get anything done here, with the right guanxi you can gain money easier and faster than trying to gain face with only using money. But you can make the chicken and egg argument.
at least one girl that can visit you once a week (at the very least)

zengping: you are a young chinese man!!! go out there and find yourself some good time girls!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I thought really hard about this because I didn't want to be like the majority of answers and say I wanted a girl. BUT........there you have it. A lovely Chinese girl would be a great advantage for a number of reasons which I won't go into about here.
Hand sanitizer, pocket tissues, western condoms that fit, good coffee beans and a boatload of patience (it's hard at times).
A good local girlfriend always helps.

I like to get to know them well, get them (and me) to get a medical then I'm the bare back kid...
Mmm almost every answer here is about girls... Well yeah I get it. But I think you need to be clear about who you are and what you stand for. If you come here without that you'll suffer as much as the locals when the constant abuse, belittling, threats, ... (list goes on) get you down. You need to be able to still be yourself when the sh*t hits the fan - otherwise you'll lose it.
Although of course coming over all righteous is a sure way to get yourself a good a*s-kicking. Like anything else, moderation is the key.
brain or memory or calendar or awaken mind (whatever you name it) to remind you that one day you will leave this place. Then everyday becomes as beautiful as heaven and you learn to enjoy every moment. Lately I compared myself as a computer. Before sleep I format the brain. Next day I get up fresh. No anger, No criticism. Just the bright day (next year, this time) I see.
You need faith, god in your life! A spiritual leader to guide you!

The only guidance one needs is the spirit of Mao. All praise Mao the almighty.
More shoes, winter better heat, good meat, and to see Sparkey get a 200 volt power surge from her keyboard. I can't find a hacker program,, blue screen death,, fries modem ,,, Love Letter Virus II, nope has to be done manually.
A sense of humour, a sense of irony and endless patience.
China has everything. Blue skies, wide open spaces, fresh air, the best beaches on earth, and the most livable cities in the world.
