Q: When you renew to a new passport (US) is residence permit in old passport still useable?

Am I able to enter china using a passport that had been renewed? - the old passort (different passport no.) with the old residence permit (still valid until Aug 30) and the new passport (with a new passport no.)? Is that residence permit still valid or do I have to get a whole new visa because I renewed the passport for entry? Other detail is that its for employment, the old residence permit was only for 6 months because I had a temporary passport and I want to know if I can simply enter with it still in the previous (USA) Passport?

Yes it is, just gotta carry two passports around for awhile and remember to go to the police station and update the system with your new passport number#.

Thank you , and do you have any idea what the immigration officer will ask for at the entry point into China? is it a fairly routine thing for them to see? any details on that and whether I won't get asked to leave, would be nice, thanks

You won't be asked to leave ...you mean denied entry to China? ... if you'll have both passports with you.

You'll need both books elsewhere too...Banks and everywhere, where ID is necessary.

It's a fairly frequent occurrence for this to happen. I had to get a new UK passport last year in Guangzhou. When I got the new one they cancelled the old one. So for two months, until I got a new resident permit (in the new passport) I had to carry both with me and show them both when passing immigration. I had no problems.

The he geadache you do have with your new passport, once you've got a new RP in it is you'll have to get your details change at the bank, temporary registration office, work and also yoyr Chinese driving license (if you have one)

Just confirming what the others said above.

Yes, it's very common.
I left the country twice this year using both passports and nobody even questioned it.
