Q: Where and how has the "west" influenced China?

Besides,

architecture: in Shanghai for example the bound, xintiandi shikumen

music: no Chinese Rock or pop ( see Japan and Korea) just a copy of American-European music. Tang dinasty is far away already...

what else?

Japan in 70's made cheap copies and then starting making better quality than the west, cars, electronics, etc.

China did not make better quality yet, BUT, BIG Butt here, they took materialism and materialistic behavior to a level I have never seen in the west. I have always wondered if this was because of lack of religious values, culture, no rule of law, no empathy for others, what made materialism here go through the stratosphere here. Is it the fault of the west, we made this country the factory of the world, poured in the capital investment, both countries did the dance and made money, sacrificed the American middle class to put a middle class here. what triggered this selfish behavior, the one child policy, maybe, a little bit of all of it. I just find materialism here that is  way out of proportion, lack of charitable work and concern maybe, I don't know, It's been one of the few things I have not found an answer for here.

haha, might be easier to ask 'how hasn't it'.  The young generation here seems to think they are from Cali ,,,  haha ,,,,  things keep going this way in a few more generations it'll be like AmericaClone - ChinaStyle.  *just without the 'cultural diversity' of the States.

look how youth dress,,,  US style,  every kids t-shirt is in English,,, not Hanzi,, most every sneaker is Nike, Adidas, or that one from the 1950's,,, can't recall the name,,, oh yeah, Converse. Food,, US stuff,,,  hell, they're probably using a knife and fork too,,, they prolly think Kuai zi just for the old fks.  they do seem to favor Asian pop music though,, but they definitely listen Western too.

*but we didn't influence them to put corn on a pizza!!  haha

I was walking around megamall in GZ the other day and had Corn Dogs in the food court! awesome

Spiderboenz:

Corn dog, as in a battered hotdog on a stick?

Or a battered ear of corn on a stick?

...because that actually is a thing, at least in Nanjing.

I don't think anyone from the west teaches them these. Low lives are simply low lives.

ambivalentmace:

yes, I can't think of any western cultural influence that says defecating on an airline seat or the aisle is ok. I actually have not even heard of an African tribe civilized that has ever done this in history, and I have made many flights on KLM out of Africa to Europe over the years. Amsterdam is probably the melting pot of the world for air travel passengers and they behave better.

Bet you haven't seen any other human being other than the low lives of mainland china doing this either.

i think its a slow train where they turned the seats to face each other for cards.

notice the guy on the left facing the wrong way with his feet propped up on what used to be a reasonably clean seat, but that could be a fast train, except the fix table at the window for everybody to share and not in the seats, its a slow train.

the above photo is a high speed train. I have seen this a few times

ambivalentmace:

Did the older fast trains have a shared table by the window, have not seen that in shandong maybe other areas of china.

Yup, most old trains have those so-called tables where you can put at most four cups on.

Eating junk food and processed food instead of real food, and the obesity and diabetes epidemic that is coming to a village near you soon.

ambivalentmace:

It's really a shame we can't export progressive liberalism to China and make it a great Utopia like Europe and America, maybe the next generation can finish the job

A: "... through ..."?  Only "through" comes to mind is "Shenzhen agent can connect you with an employer, who's authorized to hire waigouren ... and can sponsor Z visa." It's not like every 10th person you meet in Shenzhen's hood can sponsor work visa ...  The only way to change from student to labourer visa is just a regular way by: 1. Finding an employer, who'll apply for an Invitation letter; 2. Exit China and apply for Z visa in your home country's Chinese embassy; 3. Enter China in 30-days after Z visa was stamped into your travelling instrument ...As I am aware, you won't be able to switch to Working permit by remaining in China....,so make ready for a return to your home .... -- icnif77
