If I would be in Guangzhou, I would shop in HK, for 25% discount on mainland prices. Maybe, there's more shopping info in the Newspaper:

Beijing Road is the main shopping road there as far as I'm aware. It's pedestrianised and similar to Wangfujing in Beijing.

Like dom87 mentioned, depends on what you want to buy.

1. Wholesale places for clothes and shoes (men's and women's):

You can go to the places near the Railway Station. Liuhua, BaiMa and TianMa (clothes), Kowloon and Wantong (shoes), are the ones I've been to. There are a lot more there, but I haven't been to them. I still go there to buy shoes sometimes, but I've given up on finding any clothes that I like there... Most of the wholesale places are reluctant to sell you only one piece of clothing, and whenever I did find something I like, they never have my size. :(

2. Tiyu Zhongxin (or Tiyu Xi Lu) - make-up, clothes, shoes, watches, etc:

Plenty of malls here with international brands. Especially Zhengjia Guangchang has more than a few of the better known clothing brands (H&M, Pull and Bear, Stradivarius, etc.). And if you go to OneLink Plaza, you can find Zara and Mango there. If you go to Taikoo Hui, you'll find an Uniqlo there (and the more expensive brands: Guess, Gucci, Louis Vuitton, etc)

3. Gangding -- Electronics

4. Nanfang Daxia -- Electronics (market, more wholesale orientated, but they generally don't mind selling you one piece. I think they mostly sell electronics parts (cell phone screens, batteries, etc.)

5. Daxia tou -- 2nd hand electronics market

6. Beijing Lu -- everything (more clothes, shoes, make-up, some electronics):

I think it's supposed to be the "Wangfujing" and "Nanjing Lu" of Guangzhou.. though it most definitely cannot be compared to those 2 pedestrian streets. Personally, not much for me to see there.

7. Haizhu Square (wholesesale, but they don't mind you buying one)-- toys, some jewelry, miscellaneous

8. Changshou Lu -- clothing

I haven't been there (yet), but apparently it's like Beijing Lu (also a pedestrian street), only the clothes are cheaper (and lower quality?).

And I agree with icniff77, if you have the time and prefer shopping in the big malls and so, maybe it is better to head to Hong Kong and Macau.

Happy shopping!

Thank you very much. It's very useful.

Debbie's list is very complete, let me just mention a couple things...

Beijing Lu sucks, it's not as impressive as you might hear, very few stores, the actual Beijing Lu is very small, many of the better shopping areas are next to Beijing Lu. The actual Beijing Lu itself is crowded, has overpriced shops, and beggars and fake watch sellers galore.  The only thing that makes the trip there worth it is the Un Bookstore, Tiger Prawn Vietnamese Restaurant, and a few other well-hidden shops.

Shangxiajiu, which is located near Changshou Lu is an awesome classic shopping street, with tons of stores that are not wholesale, but still sell everything at discounted prices, and will sell 1 piece at a time and often bargain.  This street is very long, but I think it has the best mix of clothing stores in the area, plus is a fun place to visit.  Much like Beijing Lu, the shopping doesn't end there, if you walk around areas in every direction, there are more malls, individual shops and wholesale markets everywhere you look.

Haizhu Square has many many markets, for anything you might think of.  Just be prepared to wander around for a long time trying to find things you may have come for.

A: "... through ..."?  Only "through" comes to mind is "Shenzhen agent can connect you with an employer, who's authorized to hire waigouren ... and can sponsor Z visa." It's not like every 10th person you meet in Shenzhen's hood can sponsor work visa ...  The only way to change from student to labourer visa is just a regular way by: 1. Finding an employer, who'll apply for an Invitation letter; 2. Exit China and apply for Z visa in your home country's Chinese embassy; 3. Enter China in 30-days after Z visa was stamped into your travelling instrument ...As I am aware, you won't be able to switch to Working permit by remaining in China....,so make ready for a return to your home .... -- icnif77
