For basics like jeans, t-shirts, sweatshirts, thermal tights and underwear I would go to Uniqlo. The clothes are quite plain but I've always felt that the quality was good for the price you pay. There's a Uniqlo on 969 Nanjing Xilu.

You could also try American Apparel. Their clothes are good but slightly pricey for Chinese standards. (F1&2, 138 Huaihai Zhong Lu, Infiniti Plaza ,淮海中路138号无限度广场1-2楼)
