Q: Where can I buy clothing at moderate prices for a Westerner in Beijing??

I went to a couple of posts and it refers you back to Taobao. I only need a new pair of jeans, probably about 3 long sleeved shirts and a decent pair of flats. I need to be able to try the clothing on since I am tall (5'10) and way curvier than the average Chinese gal (size 14). Do you know any good places? Will it be ok to go to Village at Sanlitun or are there cheaper places that I could go to? If so, what line/metro stop should I use?

Thank you kindly!

Village is expensive as hell. I won't give you the best places I know, but from what you said, if you're only looking for the strict minimum, next to the Village is a place called Yashow (ya xiu). It's one of those black markets with everything, ALL is fake, they will try to convince you otherwise, but don't listen. A pair of jeans and shoes are like 40-50 yuan each if you're generous, but won't last very long, and shirts like 20 yuan. Bargain hard, never accept their offers, NEVER look interested, if he refuses your offer directly walk away and he'll call you back saying "ok ok" in an angry tone.
Remember, all their merchandise, every single item, is fake, of low quality, and worth LITTLE, don't fall for their smiles and nice words.

Thank you. What would be the best places you know though? ;)

Wow, you really manage to get shirts for 20 rmb and jeans for 40 rmb? You must have hypnotizing skills because when I went last week with a Chinese friend, the lowest they got jeans down to was 100rmb and shirts about 80-90rmb. If you're a foreigner, they'll never sell the clothes that cheap. Those sales people are stubborn folk and they can afford to not sell you the item because another clueless foreign will snap it up for the over-inflated price a few minutes later.

Well it takes some effort, but usually if you can speak Chinese, or at least have a Beijing accent, they'll give you WAY lower prices, and you can still lower them!

If you're in the Sanlitun area, I recommend Uniqlo for jeans. They usually have bigger sizes and the jeans are a comfy fit and last fairly long. At around 250-300 a pair, it's not too bad, in my opinion. You could also try H&M (in Dongzhimen Raffles City) for long-sleeved shirts. They may not be as cheap as in Yashow, but you get to try them on and you save time and reduce stress.

What would be the subway stop for H&M and UniqLo, respectively? Also is Yashow the market right across from the Beijing Zoo?

Mr_spoon:

Those are all in the Village, and Yashow is next to it, in Sanlitun. The one he's talking about is the Xizhimen 西知门 market, west of the 2nd or 3rd ring. There's a subway that gets there, and it's close to the zoo.

The subway stop for H&M is Dongzhimen 东直门. There's another one in Xidan as well so you can just take the subway to Xidan. The closest subway to the Sanlitun area is either Tuanjiehu or Dongsishitiao, but it's about a 15-20 minute walk from the station.

My partner goes to the big clothing market opposite the zoo whenever she goes to Beijing to visit her relos. Not sure what it is called.

A: "... through ..."?  Only "through" comes to mind is "Shenzhen agent can connect you with an employer, who's authorized to hire waigouren ... and can sponsor Z visa." It's not like every 10th person you meet in Shenzhen's hood can sponsor work visa ...  The only way to change from student to labourer visa is just a regular way by: 1. Finding an employer, who'll apply for an Invitation letter; 2. Exit China and apply for Z visa in your home country's Chinese embassy; 3. Enter China in 30-days after Z visa was stamped into your travelling instrument ...As I am aware, you won't be able to switch to Working permit by remaining in China....,so make ready for a return to your home .... -- icnif77
