uh oh,, showing my age,, but I remember when it was guys and girls,,, and we said bad things about the others,,,  called them 'Q...,,'Fa*s, Homo's,,,  they were just barely beginning to get/be accepted into society. *I mean Southern Conservative society...

now I have two guys in my class who are 'Open' about it,, or however u say it,,, one of them even uses a female name! and one girl or two acts Les or Bi ,, pretty openly.  even has a Lip Piercing!

At my time in China, I saw kids of any age as too friendly and I mostly worked in small cities. I didn't see it as gay thing, but just friendliness at almost every male in the class. Same thing at females is regular thing ... 

Boys holding hands without any shame, constantly bending on each other, hugging and what not. However, that didn't 'sound' gayish to me. 

IMO, it was a reflection of one kid policy and I saw such attention between kids happened because of the lack of siblings.

Less than 5-years ago, gays didn't exist in China. It was some kind of prohibition or shame in place to be gay, if I remember right.
