If you want to study with an X visa, or at a school, then do not bother with any of those companies. Go to a reputable university which has such programs.

Look here: http://www.cucas.edu.cn/school_Search/17-0-0-0-0-0-0.html

CUCAS is legit, has the backing of the government, and will get you into any school that accepts you. If there's a problem, CUCAS will shit on them from such a height that they'll think Halley's Comet showed up too early. I honestly recommend them. They've gotten me out of a lot of binds.

Don't bother with shady or disreputable schools.

To revise my earlier statement, if your friend is coming to Tianjin for the sole purpose of studying, then he/she should go to a university. If your friend just wants to learn some Chinese while also working/hanging out/whatnot, then you can consider a place like the EZ Institute. For example, I study Chinese there in the morning and teach English in the afternoon and evening. It's also nice, because it doesn't run on a semester schedule, so you don't have to join only in January or August (or whenever Chinese university semesters start.) And you can pretty much find a class for the time and level you want.

I apologize for my lack of knowledge of Chinese universities. I don't know if you can jump in during the middle of a semester or just take one class or etc. etc.
