I use vanilla extract a lot.  I have a local source for it, but here it is expensive, 36 Rmb for a little bottle.  Larger bottles, maybe 5 inches all and 1 inch diameter are 140 Rmb.  I mostly get mine when friends from USA come visit here, they stay at my place, and I ask them to bring me a few bottles.  If you need some desesperately, and can not get it locally, drop me a line using the email service here, we can arrange payment and I will mail you some of the local stuff.

I have not seen turmeric powder in China.  Try hard to locate a shop selling things from India, since most turmeric comes from there, maybe you will get lucky.  A substitute could be a little mustard and a pinch of saffron, but you will get a reddish color, maybe orangish, but not the typical yellow color of turmeric

taobao can be trusted with canned, packed or dry food items.  I use it often.  Because of delivery delays I myself would not order cheese, meat, dairy, etc., unless you are a in a same day taobao delivery zone.  I have had consistently good fortune with the food products that I have ordered from taobao.

try the supermarket under the Rich Gate mall. I went there for the first time last week and was suprised at the number of products. If not, when you next go to Beijing, you'll definately find what you want in April Gourmet or Jenny Lou's, including real vanilla pods.
