Are there massive cotton plantations in China to provide the cotton for the millions of tonnes of clothes manufactured here every year?

Yes they do, also they focus in silk. Now the cotton made in China is more expensive than the one produced outside the country so some producers will import it from India, Pakistan and other Asian or African countries.
Vast quantities of cotton is imported from areas like India and Bangladesh. The office block that my company is located in has several companies that do nothing else but specialize in imported cotton. Many of them operate from very large offices and have twenty or so staff (not bad for import agents).
Certainly,There are a large number of plantations in xinjiang. Also plantations are exist in other places of China.Import cotton from other countries is a very important way.
