Q: Where does one witness the rudest behavior in China?

Went to see Batman last night at the cinema and wow...just wow. It was like the precondition for complete silence brought out the worst in people. Cell phones going off and ringing for 20-30 seconds before being turned off, a woman behind rubbing some type of oil-based cream on her legs that smelled like putrefied whale flesh, the ones in front eating of a chips bag and belching loudly (though I've been subjected to this in the States as well), children screeching like chimpanzees to my right. It was a circus, pure and simple. I understood half-way through the movie why they'd put the sound so loud. It was to drown out the noise of the swines watching.

All that to say, as far as I'm concerned, movie theaters is where I see the foulest behavior from people.

Try sale day at H&M.  Then you will not just see rude, but homicidal intent.

Any place there's a queue, or at least where there's supposed to be a queue.

KTV with rich business men...no contest.  They treat the girls like shit.

cooter:

Truth.  But then the girls are paid pretty well to take said abuse (well, at least my boss tips pretty generously).

I'll take your word for it. I'm neither in the business where I deal with rich businessmen nor the money bracket where I socialise with them. Also the KTVs I occasionally go to are with my wife and her friends and all we do is...........sing and drink, certainly no 'other' girls!

The taxi driver in the bike lane who honks his horn at everyone to get out of the way. They are almost ALWAYS rude to me!

Of course the fact that as soon as they honk their horn I invariably move to the centre of the lane and slow right down, may have some bearing on this behaviour.

Xpat.John:

In Guangzhou, they do the same thing on the sidewalks.  :(

I find this a really odd question as it seems to presuppose China to be a nation of rude people, which to me is absurd. It makes me wonder whether most of the people on this site don't live in the more foreigner populated cities like Shanghai, where I imagine relations between the Chinese and their foreign guests might be a little more strained than in other, less foreigner populated areas. But then i've heard many on this site mention that they're living in a variety of cities, many of which I know to be quite sparse in terms of their foreign populations.

All I know is I get on great with people here. There are 'always' dickheads who fear change and see a foreign element creeping in as a threat. I pick up on certain looks but am wary of assuming an understanding of what is behind them. At the end of the day if anyone steps up to me and is rude I will meet that head-on, but in the past seven years of living here full-time I have only had to do that once. I got an elbow in a club, turned and faced the man, and faced him down. Otherwise I find people on the whole to be friendly to me, curious, wary, maybe nervous, but rarely outright rude.

The queuing thing gets me literally every time, but then it also surprises me how little it seems to bother everyone else. For me this does present a problem as I am loathe to back down when I feel someone is trying to take advantage of me or gain an advantage over me by ill means, but I also don't want to be the ranting foreigner balling out some old lady who's skipped the queue when i'm buying breakfast. I was placed in a situation the other day when a big fella stepped in front of me at the local grocery store; I was about to see red when some little guy squeezed quickly in front of him, paid and buggered off. I was genuinely surprised as in London this would CERTAINLY have turned ugly, absolutely no doubt about it, but nope, not at all - no wrong doing was even considered.

So I don't see the Chinese as rude, no, not compared to folks back home. Queuing is an annoyance but it seems i'm the only one who really minds, the driving like lemmings thing is crazy but is made up for by the surprising lack of road rage, in fact i'd have to say the Chinese are not rude as much as insanely laid-back.

I posted earlier on this thread to say that I thought the rudest place was right here. That was a joke, but it was also true. I've encountered more insult and aggression from westerners in China than from the Chinese themselves, hands down. The Chinese i've had tell me all westerners are rich, tall, some have suggested we're all here to find wives, one guy said westerners are all unhappy, can't think of any more, but on here i've had people tell me all Chinese are arrogant, rude, thieves, cheats, liars, and more, and all in such a relatively short time.

I guess it's just venting. People away from home and outside their comfort zone have a need to do so. Fair enough, have at it, it doesn't really bother me. I've gotta vent too.

  There. All done.

Haha, balanced gracefully by someone else's thumbs down. Seems there's always someone who'd prefer to maintain a 'healthy' negativity towards our Chinese cousins.

In my experience here, I have seen two types of rudeness. One is cultural and much different than in Western cultures.  It seems that if there in no relationship between two people (such as two drivers in cars on the road) it is culturally acceptable to behave in a rude, self seeking manner.  However, once you get to know a person and establish a relationship the rudeness disappears.  The other type is just plain old rudeness like you can find everywhere.

Maybe in restaurants where people spit on the floor or empty their nose of snot on the floor while others are eating their dinners.  That's damn rude in my book.

One man's line between rude and cultural differences are different to the next man's.

Depending on where you are from, your upbringing and your own expectations.
