Q: Which 2nd or 3rd tier Chinese city to start teaching?
Hello everyone! I was hoping to enquire about which 2nd or 3rd tier Chinese city would be good for starting my teaching career? I have checked some information online, but was hoping if someone on the ground in China can give their thoughts, any feedback is really appreciated. Thank you for your time.

Hello Emma,
I would suggest the following cities:
- Harbin (cold but great events, food and decent pay)
- Dalian (clean city, good for travel to S. Korea or Japan, decent pay)
- Qingdao (great beer & food, good middle point between Beijing/Shanghai, pretty good pay)
- Xi'an (a little polluted, very cheap to live, lots of schools, decent pay, lots of tourist places)
- Hangzhou (beautiful city, especially smaller towns, decently clean, higher pay, higher cost)
If you can get away with Haikou or Sanya (tropical climate but low pay)... then these may be good options as well.

I protest. Harbin has good beer too . oh how i wish i was there now and not in 30 pluss in Brisbane

Imo ot would depend on what environment you would like to live in.
and don't forget culture can be different in not only big cities but different areas in China.
Then there is the matter of how far you want to be away from other foreigners.
I think you might want to ask a few more questions before making a decision.

Don't let geography dictate your career. Apply for 100 jobs and choose the one that sounds best. The location is just one of many variables. I'd put pay, paid holidays, working and living conditions above location in order of importance. Research your employer and the location.

That's the point though, it depends on your preferences...
I can understand that some people will prefer to live in a 2nd or 3rd tier city in China to avoid being around foreigners in order to get a real immersion and improve their chinese a lot.
