I spent a bit of time researching this as well. Finally I decided to download a heap of YouTube Chinese lessons from various sources, including the inimitable Benny, transferred the files to my iPod and listen to them all the time. It's easier than the text books and you get more relevant conversational Chinese. Nihao!

Not sure what level you are hoping at... but DK makes a Chinese English Visual Bilingual Dictionary.

Its small enough to carry around and pack full of more words then you'll ever need to know. Plus picture of all the different stuff to help with things like food.

But being a big shopping center in the middle of Shanghai, it wasn't cheap so you might want to look around first.

I recommend the Chinese text books from primary schools.
When I finished my primary school, I found that I can read news papers and novels.
