Q: Which is the best Masters' for finding a job in China?

Which Masters degree course most employable in China?

I am a Biotechnology graduate from the UK looking to stay in China. I have been here for over a year on a language course and am close to sitting my HSK 5. Sadly after I graduated, I found that jobs in the Biotechnology Industry are few and many require a PhD.

My dream is to working in Consultancy.

I know people are going to mention Peking University and Tsinghua University. However the course they offer are not that extensive other than Chinese Law, MBA, International Relations ect.

I'm considering the Master of Finance at Renmin University of China. I believe undertaking some coding projects would improve my employability however Renmin does not over Computer Science courses to foreigners.

any suggestions are very welcome, I'm aware that taking a Masters may not even be the best option for me now too.

your best option is to do your Masters in the UK (or any other country that is not China) - then at least it will be worth something should you change your mind about remaining in China.

chinese qualifications are worth squat in most other countries of the world.

think through where you see yourself where you want to see yourself in 3 or five years time, because you don't want to waste your time doing a course that is worthless.

you say  you are close to sitting your HSK 5 - this would be of more long-term value in an English speaking country in a company that does extensive business with China.

Your degree alone will give you a much higher standard of living in any other country. Given the fact that China is now concentrating on hiring it's own people who have an education from the west, you are less likely to find something worth while in Mainland China. The other thing is all the paperwork you have to do before you even start work, and or school.

1. don't study in China

-----------------------------------

2. don't study MBA if you have no management experience - it might be a dead end

3. don't study Finance - unless you are lucky and get a CFO positio in a wfoe (ain't gonna happen without experience) no one will hire a foreigner for a finance position

4. Most jobs i see on the job boards are: HR, GM, Production Manager, Quality Manager, Sales Manager, English Teacher.

All require usually rich working experience except ET. HR and Quality Manager are the only positions that usually require a degree

Don't get fixated on China. I guess you are supposed to be from the UK, but I can tell you that it's better to be a competitive person in the west than in China.

Most of the time when I hear people from the west talk about how they love it here (or at least that they love certain things), what they are really saying the love is how it's easy to be living OK here (relative to locals) without much effort, and they love how pretty girls find them compelling in the face of less competition.

But those are really better seen as issues with themselves struggling competing like-for-like against people with similar expectations and opportunities than something magical about living in China.

Ask yourself if you could be making $100K+ a year in Shanghai or in San Diego which one would you pick? You'd be crazy to say Shanghai. You live in San Diego you can have a much better house, a nice car, clean air, nice weather and all kinds of other great benefits.

What people who get fixated on cleaning up financially in China are missing is that if they have the skills to clean up they'd be better off doing it in the West. The only advantages to living in China is that westerners have a kind of artificial competitiveness.

ambivalentmace:

if you have a job in San Diego, live in playas beach in a 2 bedroom for 400 dollars a month and save your money and cross the border everyday for work. San Diego is just too damn expensive. check tijuana apartments on craigslist.org versus San diego apartments on craigs list, about 70 percent cheaper across the border.

expatlife26:

You're missing the point, it's not about San Diego or the rent savings of living in Mexico.

It's that if you're trying to think how can I get a degree leading to a good paying job, why limit yourself to China?

Most of the time when people complain about how it's tough in the west all of their problems would be solved by having a competitive job.

So why not focus on what degrees will get me to six figures+ in a place that's also nice to live? What's the advantage of living in China other than a higher relative social status compared to all the drawbacks?

What the others said.

BUT.... also when you're considering your overseas university, look at where it ranks internationally. Getting another master's degree from Sheffield isn't going to turn heads as much as one from Oxford, Cambridge, or Harvard!

Tsinghua will look good for China - but that's about it (unless you're going to do something China related...).

I'd actually suggest - look at international trade (law, etc) w Chinese language & translation, then get the hell out of this country, and score a job overseas with a company that's investing here. Put yourself in a box seat of knowing the 'Chinese' way, as well as the language, as well as knowing how the rest of the world does things...

A: "... through ..."?  Only "through" comes to mind is "Shenzhen agent can connect you with an employer, who's authorized to hire waigouren ... and can sponsor Z visa." It's not like every 10th person you meet in Shenzhen's hood can sponsor work visa ...  The only way to change from student to labourer visa is just a regular way by: 1. Finding an employer, who'll apply for an Invitation letter; 2. Exit China and apply for Z visa in your home country's Chinese embassy; 3. Enter China in 30-days after Z visa was stamped into your travelling instrument ...As I am aware, you won't be able to switch to Working permit by remaining in China....,so make ready for a return to your home .... -- icnif77
