For me, it'd probably be some "sage" like Lao Tzu, who's at once distinctly Chinese yet universal in character. Not Confucius as he was too obsessed with preserving order for my liking.
Out of the living Ch. I know, it'd probably be some of the older businesspeople I see around town, such as my next door neighbor, who is always very dignified and well-dressed and gives me something positive to remember about the country.
And you?
A vote for Dr. Sun Yat Sun. Maybe I should go see the museum about him at his birthplace, that I live quite close to.
The man who brought China the proper use of upper lip hair growth.
Deng Xiao Ping. Certainly not perfect but probably the number one reason why your sitting in a comfortable apartment right now and not a rice field. And also why we all have jobs here.
KimOnach:
Yeah. Yeah. The guy who declared dirty money is still money... eeeeer, sorry, that "a black cat that catches mice is still a cat" (so fucking deep really) and who's responsible for the current lost generations that have zero beliefs in anything except money. Thanks Deng Shopping, thanks for being the reason I'm sitting in buildings that won't last two decades because they were built by unscrupulous and uncaring promoters.
mike695ca:
@Kim I didnt say he was a spiritual leader. I have no idea where you come from, but im happy that your president or whatever has made you such a great person. Good for you.
Im saying before him, was extreme poverty and after him was extreme growth. So while you rail on against horrible hopeless money loving chinese people ( which you should probably attribute to Mao anyways as he made everyone so poor and starving that this fear of it still persists today) the chinese people themselves are pretty damn happy. Comparatively speaking of course.
Isnt that the main focus of a leader? Growth and betterment of the masses? Mission accomplished!
KimOnach:
Yes, you are right. I was misguided. I used to think China still had issues, but now I see the latest official satisfaction polls stating 102,34% of the Chinese population is happy, I will revise my judgment and write an excuse letter.
How did Deng Shopping helped the glorious PRC getting such splendid results? Well, it all started with a strike of problem solving genius, some day back in 1989...
mike695ca:
I must say, you are my favorite troll here. You at least make things interesting. Where are you from? Pretty much any place can look like a piece of shit when you only focus on the negative and are completly ignorant to the rest. You also do not seem to understand the term "comparatively speaking" . I did not say the whole population was happy. I said they were much happiER. Before starve to death now complain because iphones are too expensive. Again where are you from? Has your country seen the growth? Or are you negative about that as well. Still clamouring for the good old days? But thats not your point is it? To have thoughtful discussion. Your just bored and like to stir the pot. We all wait for your letter!

I second Dengxiaoping. Winner by a mile. Or kilometer. Kilometre. Two kilometres. Whatever.
From people I know personally:
4 professors at my university who are genuinely decent people.
My first Chinese teacher who is a very strong yet friendly woman.
My first friend in China, who is one of the smartest and kindest people I have ever met. And of course my girlfriend.
I just mention public personalities
Dead : Zhou En Lai, Lu Xun, both extremely, smart, visionary and courageous
Alive : Xu Zhi Yong and the few who got the balls to follow
Scandinavian:
Zhou En Lai, I agree there are lots of positives on him, but he could have challenged Mao but didn't
KimOnach:
I think that what followed in his life makes it up for that.
What I like with China's forbidden characters, it's they usually spare you the digging under a pile of official lies to reach some truth.
DrMonkey:
Well, Zhou was one of the few that could criticize Mao and counter-act some of his decisions without being assaulted by a mob of sycophants and/or fanatics afterward. After 1937, I think that challenging Mao was an almost sure way to forced retreat. I can understand his fears. Compare with Lin Biao :p
Wu ze tian. The unique queen in Chinese history.China needs a femal president.
