Q: Which cities/schools in China hire African teachers?

I know a white face is often preferred because the parents would like their children to be taught English by a caucasian, but I have heard of some schools which have at least 3 African teachers in their staff.

Ishe, that is true for sure but it happens mostly in the backwaters and the less-than-developed provinces.  In any case, being an African teacher in China is to be fraught with troubles all the time -- cheated on the pay, cheated on the visa, fired at random, house in substandard conditions, etc., etc.   Nonetheless, try the hinterlands in Shandong Province, the hinterlands in Jiangxi Province, the hinterlands in Hunan Province.  Look very, very carefully and be careful with every step. Believe 10% of what you are told by the schools and by the agent if you use one.

Ishe:

Thanks for the etymology, I was actually about to google that word 'Hinterlands' I've seen it and probably used it many times but, wouldn't be able to give you a clear answer if asked: what / where is a hinterland?

OK, thanks Governor, now do you suggest that I apply directly to the schools or through recruiters? But really what are the chances out of 10 for a qualified African English teacher to get a good deal in China?

981977405:

If you are asking honestly, based upon a scale of 1/10, then my honest and lamentable answer to you might be 2/10 and only after much work, much searching and much due diligence.

We recently hired an African guy in the school where I work.  It was the first time in all the years that this school has been in existence and has been hiring foreign teachers that the school hired an African.  He came to us as a replacement after an American  young kid turned out to be a thorough drunk -- and I mean thorough -- and the African was only hired an interim.  Nonetheless, he did such a stellar job that the school gave him a six-month contract and then a one-year contract after that.

I say that because he talks about his friends and most are working in miserable conditions -- bought visas (from agents), low salaries (RMB 3,000 per month for 25 hours per week), terrible living conditions, and more often than no promise no hope at all of a real Z visa.  Several of his friends have been deported, an arranged "deportation" after their schools had no more use for them; the majority encounter endless visa problems and restraints, etc.

One was arrested and is under indictment for trafficking a white powder and that nearly brought the entire  house of cards down on all of the Africans in the province.

Please be extremely, extremely careful.  As I said, or as Hugh pointed out, please write the schools directly.  Try the more backward provinces, or at least the places which desperately need teachers but which cannot secure "the white face" because of location, salary, etc.

Always apply direct if you can, too often recruiters are just after money, and btw, NEVER pay a recruiter before OR after being employed, they get their cash from the employer NOT the employee, (although many will try both).

As to who hires African teachers, unfortunately often only the absolutely most avant garde modern schools (very few) or the desperate ones, for reasons you have already alluded too. However, if you are a very good teacher, (and can prove it) and determined, you should be able to find a position, but you need to be very astute and wary.

Just about any school. THe catch is if you are an African and your skin color is Dark Chocolate they will tell you to claim you are either from the UK or the US.

Ishe:

I'd claim British, I've stayed there before any way, and what does it matter? as long as I do what is required of me and get paid at the end of the day...

Wow! The prospect of coming to China was very exciting to begin with, but after much research I must admit, I feel a bit daunted at the moment.

I think you mean Black teachers, because I know a few African teachers who got hired pretty easily. They are White though.

Show them your qualifications and skills, and always apply directly at the schools. They  will eventually see that teaching skills goes beyond skin colour

This is web link of Schools in China, authorized to hire foreign teachers. You can change parameters as 'Province', and 'School's level' in the website, and contact Schools directly:

I don't understand 'guaranteed'?

These Schools are authorized in China to hire foreigners. That means, if you sign Contract with any of the School on the web link, School will be able to sponsor Z visa, Working permit and works.
