Q: Which city in China has the best air quality?

Living in Beijing now, I sometimes feel like I will never experience fresh air again. There must be a list somewhere that ranks Chinese cities in terms of air quality, so anyone know which has the best? People used to say that Kunming was pretty good, but I hear the increase in construction there is making it worse.

On Christmas in SF it was a "Spare the Air" day.  And it looked beautiful, comparatively.

Vancouver !

The rank in the list is highly dependent on season, winds direction, and gouv. policies (in the past years, many steelworks in Hebei were told to go easy, so those in Jiangsu took the cake and more than double their production... and pollution). However, Haikou seems to be stable at the top.

tsonj:

I agree. Haikou and Sanya in Hainan seems very nice to me, no smog at all.

Xiamen sounds pretty good for me. Or Hainan?

I think the problem is that those cities with good air probably are not so modern at the same time, which means you need more time to adapt to new life style.

tsonj:

Hainan is as modern as you can get. It is the Hawaii of the east.

Scandinavian:

Yup. Plenty of modern "architecture" to make the beaches of Sanya "pretty" But most likely just as comfy as the property in the rest of the country (of course without heating)

Before Qingdao was pretty clean but right now is getting dirtier, you should leave China if your want to feel the fresh air,

Visco8:

Dalian has good air quality, is situated directly at the sea (1 1/2 h by plane from Bejing). Sand beaches are there as well!

Beihai in Guangxi is still pretty decent, but has been deteriorating steadily, Like everything else in this once pristine seaside city.
