I'm in Guangzhou and everyone tells me that things are very expensive here and cheaper elsewhere. Is it inflation? Availability? What's the deal?

In general, the larger the city, the more expensive to live in it. For your information, ZBeijing and Hong Konmg are probably the cities in Asia will the highest cost of living.
I pay 2700 Rmb per month for a 200 sq meter two floor apartment, 4 BR and 3 Baths on a city with about 8 million habitants. In Guangzhou I would expect to pay 12,000 Rmb/,onth for a similar one, in Beijing maybe 15,000 to 20,000.
Shanghai & Beijing are rated as more expensive than New York. But in both cities there are tons of people making less than 3k a month and still getting by. So I guess it all depends on how you want to live.
I found a list and an article.

Rasknik is right...this is the most expensive cities for "expats"....I saw this online a few months ago...besides I think that beaufortninja meant cities in CHINA.
mattaya:
If it is cities in China than it would be Beijing followed by Shanghai.
But that is for 'expat' living not locals. For example moscow has plenty of people living in soviet era apartment blocks that are low rent, and eating bread and taters and milk every night.
