Hi everybody.
I enjoy very much my staying in GZ. Despite what many people say about the city (ugly, polluted, etc...), I think there are a lot of charming places to see, but most of them are somewhat hidden and have to be discovered.
My main problem (so far), is the food. I miss a lot of things from France, such as cheese and charcuterie. I know you can find some of them at supermarkets, but most of the time they are low quality products with a high quality price...
And it seems very difficult too to prepare some dishes since you cannot easily find some important items such as vinegar, thyme, laurel or other culinary herbs or the different spices that we use (but the chinese don't)
I would like to start a poll of some sort about the food from our respective countries that we don't have here (or that's too expensive or low quality) and that we miss the most... It could be interesting to see what's important for which country
I begin with what i miss the most :
cheese (roquefort, camembert, gruyère)
charcuterie (french, italian or german)
chocolate (to eat or drink, no "chocolate flavor", genuine one)
coffee (ground or beans, pure arabica)
tomato sauce in cans (impossible to find some that is just tomato)
bread (baguette with thick crust)
meat in large pieces that you eat with fork and knife... and roasts too
Fresh salmon, proper bread, cheese... I brought lots of arabica coffee with me from home!
Mustard. Found some in Auchan once, but it's pretty damn far from where I live. A proper deli-style sandwich would be nice, one with some quality turkey. I've tried to fake it at home but I just can't get it right.
And I'm gonna go with you on good, quality coffee, as well.
I love Chinese food, but, you know...
pancake, hamburgers ,nathan or hebrew national hot dogs, cheese steaks, sam adams (best beer in the world), cereal, all the darn pasta, tex mex, real pizza with the right ingrediants cooked the right way by real italians who know how to cook it

I did not want to eat western, but did. I found good pizza in Guilin, not Yangshou. Had good steak. Great breakfast, french toast, pancakes, custard at Sheridan. I never saw peanut butter, but i lived.
I did not find a tea or coffee that I liked.
The local beer was fine. I love that I can walk the street drinking beer and get another at the next corner.
"Baguette" with thick crust to create the perfect kung pao chicken sandwich and maybe a pack of green Balisto (for late night munchies)
Anything else is optional ; )
I miss real beer (warm Viking mead) and authentic pizza.
donuts and carne asada tacos and or burritos and pasta
Salad with real olive oil and balsamic vinegar dressing
Bread
Cheese
Real crackers...not the crappy saltines they have here.
Cheese Whiz.....mmmmmm
Real pizza
Kokanee (best beer in the world)
Turkey
Pizza.
Cakes with fresh cream.
Potato wedges.
Shreddies or Cheerios with decent milk.
Tea with decent milk.
Local beer.
Authentic Irish whiskey.
I'm American but what I miss most is Mexican food!
Fritze:
mee too but i make my own, lots of Mexican goodies for sale in Nanjing supermarket
easily the drunken wonder of eating Taco Bell, IHOP, or Cracker Barrel the morning after
Ice cream??. Chinese ice creams are very cheap and not too bad.
Jeez, give me a good scotch fillet or porterhouse steak and an open BBQ to cook it on. Onions cooked on the side, asparagus sticks BBQ'ed as well. Tossed green salad with lettuce, tomatoes, beetroot and snow peas. A liberal splash of Worcestershire sauce on the steak and all washed down with a James Squire Pale Ale (best beer in the world).
Go shop at Jenny lou's I think the name is the best varitiy of chesses I have seen for all over the world yes a little pricey but if you want it that bad its worth it
I don't drink much coffee, but never had a good one in China, I like my Tetley orange pekoe tea better. The first thing I had when I came back was our tea,6 cups of it.I never had a good chicken dish. i had lobsters which were cray fish and too small to bother eating.
i didn't miss much,, breakfast at Sheidan was wonderful, i had pretty good pizza in Guilin and the Big Mac meal was the same as at home.
I thought I would miss peanut butter.
You can get peanut butter everywhere here (Skippy) If you go to a city like Guangzhou or Shenzhen you'll have no problems satisfying your cravings for things back home...
I miss... Cinnamon,
Japanese food,
French food
Italian food
Poutine
And normal meat (not the nasty supermarket meat that thousands of people touch every day)
Texas Pete and other good hot sauces
Good pasta
Ground turkey
Canned mushrooms
Good wine
Good steaks mmmm
Hot pockets. And kilbasa.
Part of me misses them terribly, but my bathroom scale thanks China for not having them.
