If you like - 30 C. weather, then Harbin is perfect for you.  Personally, I would give Harbin a very, very large pass in the winter.  Shanghai has got everything going for it -- it's a world-class city, there are thousands of great restaurants, it's so cosmoplitan and there is commedia dell'arte on almost every street corner.

I echo the comment on Harbin in the winter: the cold weather up here SUCKS!!!!!!!!!!!! I live about 2 1/2 hrs. from Harbin. Take it south!

philbravery:

No wonder you were asking about Shanghai

what town are you in ?

We go to Mudanjaing once a year to visit the relatives usually in May when it is warmer

Phil, the weather is just one reason why I previously asked about Shanghai. Sure, Shanghai gets cold..in the WINTER TIME..not freezing like it is now way up north still in Fall season! The city that I'm in? Daqing. Hey, I'll take the hotter weather myself..but yeah gotta have that A/C.

I say Harbin.....Shanghai is one of those unique cities......depends on what you like. If it's snowing either place could be good, but if you want to have some fun seeing cool stuff in the snow go to Harbin.

MissA:

It's a bit warm today, granted.... if I ever feel the urge to whinge about the weather I remind myself that this time a year ago the ambient temperature where I was living was -20 degrees.

That makes a warm-ish Sydney summer day a much easier thing to deal with!

Also: Phil, isn't your Mrs a northern Chinese girl? How does she cope with the intense dry heat?

I am Canadian.... winter vacation to me says, go south!!! and Neither of these cities is SOUTH ......  I suggest you think about more options. Harbins ice festival thing would probably be a good winter vacation if you like COLD ..  Shanghai, nothing good to say about it.
