Q: Which province has the best food?

I'm a total foodie and was just wondering what province/city/area you all think has the best food. I was living in Yunnan and food there is pretty great, though standard China dishes can be a bit weird. A lot of people I've met rave about food from Guangdong. Do you agree or disagree? Share your thoughts.

Yep I love the food from the south. Particularly Hong Kong.

Spring rolls, fried noodles, sweet and sour pork. etc etc

I agree the Guangdong food is great. I love Dim Sum as a concept. It is just difficult to find places where they actually do it well, unless you go to Hong Kong. The food in Guangdong, although they mean well, is often just tasting of the soy sauce the guy cooking happens to have handy.

I am a big fan of Sichuan style food too, but not when the chili becomes too much

Oooh that's a hard one. I'm personally a big fan of all things noodle and wheat-based so Shanxi cuisine is one of my favourite as is Xinjiang with their hearty naan bread and baked baozi.

Agree about the Naan bread!

I find much of Chinese food disappointing. What can I say about chicken feet, pig ears, meals of bones, bowls of chicken assholes. I hope I never eat dog or monkey brains. I enjoy Chinese fruit, egg bread and yogart. Thank God they have Chinese Skippy Peanut Butter without being shrimp flavoured.

derek:

Yeah, after 7+ years, I have to agree. I really don't care where the food is from it is either boring or disappointing.

Dumplings are the only food I still crave from time to time.

TedDBayer:

I only found one dumpling and one place that made it, dough was very eggy. Other cultures have better dumplngs, Ukrainians, Italians. And there's something to say for having sour cream or good tomato sauce.

Hunan is famous for it's hot and spicy foods in China, foods there are appetizing and delicious. Do you know stinky tofu? If you go to Hunan, it's a good choice to have a taste, very great! though, for many people, it smells very bad.
