North or South - which is your favorite and why?
I'm from Fujian, so of course I like food from there best, like also Taiwan, Hong Kong foods. Hate baozi and the very heavy food from North.
Also, I don't understand why foreigners love Sichuan food so much. I think Sichuan food was the favorite of every foreigner I meet. So strange!
Yunnan food is good. But prefer the west Chinese food (Xinjiang)
Well different style of food here.........you see the south china food like in guangdong concentrates mainly on enjoying your meal time and trying many different small portioned dishes in a variety of numbers in one meal............so it is kind of luxury food.but when it comes to food in the north like the food in dongbei.it's just all about having a meal that makes your belly full and satisfies the hunger........am not saying that north food in this way is bad but i do prefer to enjoy a guangdong afternoon tea cause it will be a meal and taste of flavors and entertainment at the same time
From the North - I love dumplings and buns.
East - fish.
South - soups, noodles, and speed-frying dishes.
West - some meats, specially stewed ones
From around Sichuan (I don't know how to name this region?) - spicy dishes.
____
Any place in China have it's specials, and I think that everybody can find favorite dishes in ANY place in China, because of cuisine diversity in 1000's of dishes in every one of them.
Why foreigners like Sichuan food?
- maybe because strong (for Them) taste of spices "equalizes" all dish, and there is less chance to taste something "strange"?
- or maybe it regulates "heath" in our organisms, and helps to withstand summer heat (specially in southern and south-eastern China)?
But is it a favorite for everyone?
For me - not. I like it the same way like others
This is also the question of knowing many "regional cuisines" and dishes before we can tell "I like it better then rest". Many foreigners finds few "favorite" dishes and stick to them... and if one of "most eatable" things was Sichuan spicy "whatever"?... ))
I love all kinds of Chinese food but prefer spicy food from Sichuan and Hunan, especially their mutton hot pot and... it is very spicy. Also love all kinds of noodles and baozi. I have even begun to cook such foods for myself since one never really knows what kind of meat is served in a restaurant. However, I also am not too shy about buying some snack food from the bicycle vendors unless looking too gross or suspicious. All in all I would say I prefer food from the North.
South: Much lighter and generally less salty, oily, and full of additives.
So far my favorites are Yunnan food and Sichuan food. I'm guessing that counts as south?
My favorite is Guangdong food as I have only lived in GD and I love seafood.
Of course this does not include dog and cat which many people here routinely eat.
My only complaint is it is not spicy enough...which brings me to my next favorite (surprise) which is Sichuan and Hunan food.
Hulk:
I pretty much hated 90% of the food in Guangdong province... but I loved everything else. Maybe I just hadn't had enough time to visit? Only there for about a week... not much time to try anything.
I like the seafood down here in Zhanjiang, Guangdong ..... and I like Szechuan, spicy stuff, like many of us.
My family likes to play with me ...... the other night (Women's Day) we went out for a "special" dinner ......... a dish we got I did not recognize and while I don't always ask, I did ask. All they would tell me is, it is not HORSE, ...YOU KNOW .... the little thing going on in Europe about theIr horse meat ..
Got home and the wife told me it was DONKEY, and she is quite adamant that she and her family do not eat HORSE. Damned if I care ...... we occasionally eat dog, worms and snakes and frogs etc. etc and now DONKEY. .......... BUT REST ASSURED, we will not serve you horsemeat!!!!!!
Where are you from, Xifei? I'm In Xiamen.
But my gf is from DongBei so I like both
I cannot handle hot food so no Sichuan for me...
