Q: Who can you really trust in China?

I am having trust issues.
Does everyone simply lie to everyone?  Is everyone a target for rip-off unless they are immediate family?
So who can you trust?

You don't walk into a room and name the first person you meet a killer,

so don't stumble around blind an think everyone you run into is innocent.

Most don't care about cutting off, ripping off, or dirting up the place for other.  And to top it off, you will always be seen as an outsider and not as good as them.  So yeah, even the nice old street vendor that you visit constantly (and hands down are her best customer ever) will even cheat you out of a couple rmb if you let her.

It's another one of those assume the worse and you'll be pleasantly surprised when it doesn't happen.

In China, I do not trust anyone.  I am very friendly with many, but no one has my full trust yet.  Or maybe a better way of saying it would be no one has earned it yet.

Trust?  That is something that was confiscated as I went through customs.

I have tried to let my guard down and "trust". Not happening, and I have been told by my wife that I am stupid if I put myself in a position of trust with many locals. I have been burned here, and each time I am referred to as the one who "should have known better". She tells me that they trust eachother so they can use eachother when the opportunity presents itself. What a way to exist!
Frustrating to say the least.

Trust is a really big word although it is small in terms of letters.  Trust in China?  Trust at home?

Where does trust begin and where does it end?  The Western conception of trust if probably very different from that of the Chinese conception.

I have Chinese friends here that I feel that I can trust implicitly and Chinese associates that I would not trust.  Similarly, but in probably far greater numbers, I have numerous Western associates here that I would not trust at all, not for one nannasecond and a far few number in whom I might my trust.

Why make it cultural?  It's just human nature and often is on a case-by-case basis.

Why are so many of the foreigners here so dodgy and creepy?  That is another that should be asked.

thedude:

Well actually my question could apply to anyone in China, but I can see your point. Because of what I do and where I stay in China I have zero contact with westerners, so I haven't experienced any of the traits you say many have. I only have a few friends here I trust, but not with everything. I was too trusting when I arrived and I trust nobody now.

Localla:

@981   I just wrote a comment to Phillxxx post but it's gone due to a problem of my computer. Both of you are pretty right here.

But give a deep look at this, maybe for someone people they got problem to distinguish the difference of people due to lack of experiences, etc.... Maybe they should learn some skills on how to avoid scam people. Such as dont trust people you know from the bars, dont trust people they approach you for ridiculous reasons, etc...

Yes, it's always wrong to generalize people!!

The only person you can truly trust is 'yourself'. If you can't trust others at least you can trust 'yourself'...when making decisions etc.,

I feel like I can trust some of the people I met here for quite a few things, like help when I need it, someone to talk to, etc. I mean, I won't spill everything to them, I only do that with my best friend. I don't know, I think it all comes down to how well you can read people and what you think is safe to tell them.

In my time on this planet I've learned that you can always trust the police and your government officials to take care of you and do what's right.
