Q: Who is a native speaker of English?

Every employer is free to specify qualifications of what people that employer would like to hire. Being a native speaker of English is one such requirement for most teaching jobs in China. However, I found the advert below rather strange. I wonder if this employer is not ashamed of himself/herself with the statement that comes after requirement number 3. There could not be a better way of exposing his/her own lack of understanding of the whole 'native speaker' and 'language teaching ' thing.

Job Requirements:
1.Only Native English Speaker from the UK/USA/Canada/Australia/New Zealand
2. Must be self motivated, hard working and enthusiastic individuals who are commited to teaching English in China
3. Outgoing and friendly personality.
Native English speakers who are of Asian descent or candidates with Asian looks will NOT be consideredNative English speakers (Caucasians ONLY) from the UK, USA, Australia, New Zealand and Canada need apply

This will definitively be consider by many foreigners a s a discriminatory ad.  But in China is probably not.  Many "private" schools do charge high fees for classes based on the fact that they are taught by "foreigners", not by those that "look" native even if English was their primary language spoken from birth.

And the "Caucasian" remark is just the added frosting to the cake........

I would not even bother to apply for such an opening with them.

some times, those school, need foreign face first, and then english, they don't care if you can teach or not, just have a foreign face, maybe white will be better for most school, it is a fact here in china, not not every school. so try to understand , china, is too large, and have too many people, some can't represent all, not matter some how many.

I did not find out what is wrong with that advert.

Empolyers have their authorities to decide what kind of peoson that want to hire. Same to chinese employees.

Different positions have different requirements. A reception lady should be beautiful, and a carpenter shoule be strong.

kchur:

Because in most countries, an ad like that, featuring blatant racist discrimination, is very illegal. Chinese go to our countries and enjoy our racial discrimination laws, and even form organizations in foreign countries to make sure that people who show signs of racial discrimination are punished.

But foreigners go to China and the Chinese are extremely racist. It shows Chinese to be parasites with very low character and no morality.

That's exactly the problem With Chinese, there's always an excuse.

If I'm rude to a Chinese in China, I'm in trouble. If I'm rude to a Chinese in Canada, I'm in trouble. I don't get excuses. I always have to be civilized, and i can never be racist. I can't say "these things always happen in Canada." I can't say, "There are cultural difference." I have no choice: I must be a civilized human being.

The Chinese can do whatever, they want, wherever they go, and they always have excuses. Whites, Blacks and Indians always have to be the adults, and Chinese can always be the children. I don't know why Chinese pretend to care so much about face, because it is obvious that no Chinese people have any face or dignity or honour when they manipulate things like this in such a dishonest manner.

That's just racist BS; a native speaker is somebody who was raised to speak English as their first language. Race has nothing to do with it.

A native English speaker is someone who was raised with English as their first language. Some jobs adverts ask that the person has spent x number of years in English speaking schools.

Race has nothing to do with being a native English speaker and nationality has nothing to do with being a native speaker apart from increasing the chances of being in an English speaking school.

You could be born in Ireland and your first language could be Irish and English could be your second language. There are probably a lot of people born in America whose first language is Spainish.

Every employer has their own idea of what kind of teacher they want in the their school. They maybe focused on the person's teaching ability or their main interest maybe to have someone who conforms to the stereotype of a westerner, ie caucasian. Their are other countries that speak English as a first language that are never on the lists of preferred countries. Sometimes they are looking for a female teacher.

You could look at it as racism or you could look at it as an indication of your chances of success. Just because you would not see an advert like that in your own country does not mean that the same racism by employers does not exist in your country.

My GFs friend is a translator and told me I do not speak proper English because I'm not British, I have a North American neutral accent. I'm Canadian. So I use a gay British accent and speak slow to her. She doesn't get that I'm playing with her. I used an East Indian accent and vocabulary style, she can't understand me. O Yez vun mo time whoopie please..

Actually, looks are usually the first qualification for a teaching job at private English training centers. I am an American with a Master's degree in English, but where my husband used to work, they didn't want me helping out with classes because they wanted a "blonde-haired, blue-eyed girl" (I'm brunette with green eyes). They ended up hiring a 19-year-old blonde-haired, blue-eyed girl from South Africa who only had a year of college under her belt. So don't kid yourself if you think this kind of racism doesn't exist. This isn't usually a problem at public schools or colleges, but at private schools and training centers, looks are everything

This employer is probably thinking he is saving time and energy by saying outright what they are looking for. But I doubt he will end up getting any applications, even from the Caucasians who do meet his criteria, because he is obviously a racist arsehole. This is one case where honestly isn't the best policy.

What decent caucasian would actually apply for that job? They can request it, but they don't understand that it's a pretty huge red flag for candidates, even those who fit the description.  I'd skip that application and look for any of the other 20+ new listings every day for the same job.  They clearly want a clown, not a teacher.

not picking a fight. but you would happily accept a job that was only offered to people of a specific nationality even though it discriminated against the local population.

I understand what you're saying, but it's a mix up between "looks foreign" and "is knowledgable about foreign things".

Does my current job discriminate against local populace?  No, locals can't teach math in fluent English.  If they could, they could have my job. If I hired a Chinese guy to import things from China or to run a Chinese restaurant, it wouldn't be because he had a Chinese face, it'd be because he knows about China and Chinese things.

god dammit !! check your gps and you will know 2 things 1. you're in china 2. you are in the year 1900. why come here looking to take a job making more than a local based on the fact that you were born somewhere else. (which you would never tolerate your home country doing that to you) but when you are discriminated against all of a sudden it is racism and you are offended?

understand this , if you are willing to come here and benefit from discrimination then you lose your right to complain about discrimination!

I'm not shocked by this attitude one bit. People all over the world are racist, elitist and like to find ways of differentiating themselves from other people. That fact of the matter is that only a native English speaker would be able to accurately discern whether someone is actually a native speaker or not, so the Chinese English schools need some way of ensuring that their teachers speak an acceptably and widely understood dialect of the language. I can't blame them because many aren't educated about the ethnicities and dialects spoken by those people in foreign countries. How would you tell the difference between someone who was a native speaker of Xhosa and someone who claimed to be?

Because they can still do the clicks while talking really fast.
