Q: Who or what is the primary source of hatred toward Japanese?
Is it the school curriculum, the elderly, or something else? Also, when the subject arises in your lessons, what questions or statements do you shrewdly employ to coach your students toward the understanding that such antipathy is now outdated, and that the object of their bitterness has long since died and been reborn as something they might actually like if they immersed themselves in it a bit?
The root cause is essentially jealousy. Japan is everything Chinese want China to be but they will never ever achieve it.
The reason for China's failings have absolutely nothing to do with the past wars.
At the close of WW2 Japan was devastated but used their position to focus on education and technology and made themselves into a great nation.
At the end of 1950, China was in the same position as Taiwan but victorious. Taiwan put their efforts in Education and in developing their economy. Today, they are still a great nation. China decide to declare war on intelligent thought. The leaders effectively forced the country back into the stone ages. And that is why China is the country it is today.
Sadly China refuses to confront the truth about their history and what their own leaders did, this means China will never progress.

Sorry. Sometimes I forget that they are prone to defining themselves by the injuries they've received and would feel ad though they were less themselves if they let an offense from a mostly deceased generation be forgotten.
I teach primary school now, so I don't have this problem, but over the last two years when I taught middle school, high school and university, it came up a lot. I tell them that my grandfather fought them and for his whole life he hated them and refused to buy a Japanese car.
I then add that his generation all thought like that, but today I think of hello kitty and robots when the word Japan is mentioned. Many students love Japanese cartoons.
My advice is not to bother trying to change their attitudes. The government use hatred of Japan to control the Chinese people. If there's ever a crisis, China will ramp up tensions and the students will carry on like the people in the open scene of the movie 1984.

It's quite clear to me - the Government are the one that still promotes anti-Japanese sentiment. Why? To promulgate the "poor me/poor man of Asia" myth and deflect attention away from problems at home.
You could get the Chinese to hate literally anything, including fluffy kittens chasing their tails, with the impressive bullshit and opinioncraft logistics they have in place.

Chinese hate Japanese but follow Japanese fashion codes that have been existing in Tokyo for a decade of so, drive Japanese cars, watch Japanese anime and play Japanese videogames, the single men in China jerk on Japanese AV (porn), the KTV/karaoke culture in Asia comes from Japan, their entire economic model is based on that of Japan between 1960 and 1990 (cheap and abundant labor, turned to export), and bazillions of other things.
Chinese are a big contradiction.
I don't know why the Chinese are so uptight about the Japanese. The Jews have gotten over the holocaust pretty sweetly - water under the bridge. It's not that big a deal. So what if Hitler's Germany systematically tried to erase their race and culture from the face of the Earth? Everybody makes mistakes - that's why pencil's have erasers on the end of them. Sure the Japanese conducted live vivisections on men, women, children, pregnant women and infants without any anaesthesia. Okay so maybe the Japanese did put Chinese civilians in human centrifuges and spun them to death, injected them with plague, killed them in high-pressure chambers, killed them in gas chambers, killed them with x-rays and tested grenades on them. These things happen. Why the Chinese get upset when the Japanese Prime Minister pays tribute to the war criminals that did such things as those mentioned above is anyone's guess. And yes, I'm being sarcastic.

Almost all of the people who committed those heinous crimes are dead now, and so are the survivors. To keep the fire of hatred burning would suggest that guilt can be inherited, which it cannot. The war is over. The perpetrators and their victims are gone. It's time to move on.
The Chinese are right to hate the Japanese of old. Even I hate them. But the Japanese of today? Those people had nothing to do with it. The butthurt is strong with China. I don't hate the Japanese of today, I just think they're fucking weird.
If you ask me, it's utterly ridiculous and childish that China acts like this on a national level. However, this is what the CCP wants. This allows them to whip the entire country up into a nationalist frenzy. China should NOT forget what happened in Nanjing, and the Jews should NOT forget what happened to them at the hands of Nazi Germany. But that doesn't mean you should hate today's Germans or Jews.
If anything, just hate the bastards who committed these terrible atrocities. It'll take a long time for the brainwash to come off. Fortunately, the brainwash is coming off my wife. She went from utterly hating Japan, to realizing today's Japanese aren't the same people, to actually wanting to visit there with me some day.

It depends on the Chinese person you are talking about. If they were born during or before the occupation then its likely a product of the occupation itself. In fact for these people its largely justified. If they were the children of that generation of people it likely stems from the stories related to them by their parents. But for every generation after that its a product of the way that the state runs the education system. One of the problems with not having elections is that elections tend to provide, or seem to provide, public consent provide enough people vote. Even if there candidate doesn't win, each vote is a vote of confidence for the system because if there were no confidence in the system these people presumably wouldn't bother to vote as it would be seen something not worth the effort. In the absence of elections the government has to rely upon a historical narrative to give it legitimacy. So they create a politics curriculum that's heavy on the "100 years of humiliation", Japanese atrocities during the 2nd world war, and the--in this case exagerated--role that the People's Army played in driving them off. The idea is to create the belief that China needs the CCP because with out it Western colonialist and Japanese militarists will come back. So the fear and hatred of Japan for younger people isn't based so much in past Japanese atrocities, but the belief that the Japanese are capable of committing them again.

Are the students really taught that nonsense? *slaps forehead* So, you're telling me that Chinese students effectively believe that Japan is still on the warpath, and that they want to conquer China and rape its women (while Chinese men are taking a break from doing it themselves)? Every country's government has a group to be boogie man to distract from poor leadership and corruption. The Americans have the Muslims, the French have the Algerians, the Greeks and Italians have the Romas and the Koreans and Chinese have the Japanese. It has happened for centuries. And will be a tactic used by governments and elite who want to successfully hold power. Powerful want to remain powerful, and will go with what works and lemmings will follow blindly
