Q: Who will win the trade war?

I can see both sides here... and I sort of agree with Trump.

But who will win?

As Trump said (that is often taken out of context). When you're losing 800 billion a year a trade war can't hurt you.

Think about the statement and not the statement maker

I suppose what I don't understand is how you're losing 800 billion. It's not like America is buying Chinese products and dumping them in the sea or something. The goods are sold on at a profit and that's how places like Walmart exist.

America loses 800 billion a year on trade period, about 300 to 400 billion a year to China.

If trade stopped, yes it will hurt some industries but overall, it would trigger a forced return of manufacturing. Because the market of America is still too important to give up on. Think about it, companies bend over backwards to get at China's market so why shouldn't America be as demanding

Yep, I understand the problem with not being allowed access to the China market, that's not cool.

But would the forced return to manufacturing actually happen or would places like Vietnam, India etc just step in to fill the void? who wants to pay American prices for product X when you can pay sweatshop prices?

To be honest if that happened I wouldn't mind. What I want is fairness. Goods made in Vietnam / India sold in the US should be taxed the same and have the same access as goods made in the US sold in those countries.

America needs to address the domestic issues that make it too costly to do business in America.

The biggest problem is to sell goods to anyone, they have to send their money to your country to buy the goods, so someone has to raise their balance with printed money of another, so one person has a surplus account and one person has a negative account, you can try and balance the trade, like bartering equal value without money like the middle ages, but the tariffs are just mafia shake down money, its the broker taking a piece of your stock transaction or the agent taking a piece of your property sale, but these tariffs are quite higher than agents shaking you down for pocket change.

China uses the tariffs to avoid taxing there and shaking down their own citizens and risking domestic discontent and trying to pay for internal security that cost more than the miltary does, for them, this is harmonious stabilizing security for self preservation of the government. I don't see an easy answer for this problem.

There is a reason America only controls the oil fields, Putin wanted to stop oil and natural gas from being sold at a discount against his price to Europe or he would have no economy at all, so the Americans want give up the oil fields and let Europe be blackmailed for higher heating costs in the winters. Israel is hated by Europe so if Putin wants a Syria,Israel, Russia price cartel, he could probably get it. This is why Turkey is only protesting a little about the border region. I really wish I knew more about trade imbalances and all that crap... too lazy to look it up though.

From what I understand though China sells more of their products to America than America sells to China, 800 billion more and that's Trump's problem with China.

What I don't understand is how putting tariffs on what China sells to America is going to help America. Surely America is buying this stuff because they need it, and businesses that buy it pay taxes and employ Americans, and presumably they buy Chinese goods because the goods are either not available in America or are too expensive and there would be no profit in buying local?

Englteachted:

I forgot to mention the other issues with China on trade, China uses state money to subsidize their companies so they can undercut foreign companies and buyout foreign companies, against WTO rules. Also China uses their government spy/ hackers to steal tech from foreign companies and then make cheap copies. Read my post about Australia

But consider Wall street money in China. For example, Betsy devos has an amway factory up the road from me. Massive. Probably about 4k employees.

Will the sanctions affect stuff made here with American investment? What if China imposed an export tax on Iphones? That would be interesting.

Or an export tax on Trump stuff made in China. Trump has not really disconnected himself from his business. He goes to Mar a lago and they charge the secret service for rooms and golf buggy hire. Like every other time there will be a back door trade off that we won't know about for years to come or ever .
They are just playing the game.
Maybe there is a deal under the table about the take over of a third party ...two possible candidates come to mind.
Time will tell

ambivalentmace:

I still believe Trump will go third party and bankrupt the system in a plan so the other 2 major parties don't get the blame when the debt default and currency change and confiscation starts. He said that there should not even be a debt ceiling to avoid all shutdowns in the future, of course he has lived in debt his whole life, so it's no real surprise. If you plan to crash the system anyway, give the left and right everything they want before you crash it all. I hope I am wrong but this guy will run up more debt than the last asshole did, but if they don't try and impeach him because he is giving everybody all their funding, then we know the fix is in and already done.

But here is the thing. Under Obama, US corps squirred their overseas earnings away on offshore jurasdictions. The EU even fined Ireland, trying to force them to take tax from apples 220 billion stored there while waiting for a republican government to offer a cash repatriation amnesty.

With companies keeping their cash in tax havens to avoid tax, how can we be sure the numbers are right?

This was yet another Obama failure. He did not crack down on tax avoidence. Because how could he? Pay to play. We fund your campaign... you dont crack down on offshore tax avoidance.

Then the icing on the cake, the Chinese brag to you how about how gullible and stupid America is at doing business and letting them screw over companies in their Asian smug ethnocentric attitude in your business meeting were you don't drink and listen to them brag and condescend and then when you need some relief in court for 10 years for people using your brand and your name and lose in Chinese court and lose lots of money on legal bills, you say fuck it, I will run for president and get even and stop this shit forever. My prediction is that China will win this one. Two good reasons: China is only now switching to a consumer oriented economy; and, China has other markets to persue that include some higly populated countries. Why will the US lose? Trump gives me the imprssion that he doesn't understand economics. Like most businessmen, they think in terms of short term gains rather than long term strategy. We must not forget he is a successfull business man. But attacking his allies, and going agianst his own government people is making America look bad. Trump is America's most dangerous security threat. There are really too many variables that will pop up on this trade war. I can't say I like Trump. But he has got balls. The bigger question is can the US recover after the next election in 2020 assuming that Trump is not re-elected? And what happens if America does win the trade war?

ambivalentmace:

I really don't think he cares about the consequences, he is getting even with the left who laughed and made fun of him for years and getting even with countries that tried to screw him in business. I don't think he cares about anything except America should be run like a business, you can't print money and waste it, and if you do, bankrupt and screw some one else with the bill. It is funny to watch the globalists who know that you have to break down America and lift every other country up by shaking down America and get equal parity and misery to get a new world order just got their plans all shot to hell and have to put the plan on hold for a while. There will no world order of elites ruling a planet of indentured servants obeying there whims of wisdom. Poor fools thought they had it in the bag with Clinton bought off.

China has the most to loose in a trade war...but they will make up for the loss by taking over land and sea areas till they are stopped

hippy:

Completely disagree. Most of the products that are imported into amerika from china are for western korporations. If amerika imports an iphone for $800, $100 of it goes to chinese who are actually doing the work. $700 of it is going to amerikan oligarks who do none of the work. For the past 40yrs, amerikan oligarks have been getting something for nothing.

Time will tell the tale. They thought the tariff gravy train and world projects would be funded and continue and they would have more time, but Trump just took the 15 year clock and set it on one year and now we will see how economically brilliant these braggarts really are, looking forward to the show.

the point is, amerika has the most to lose with the trade war, and that will be that way for at least the next 5yrs, because the profit from those imported chinese goods go to western oligarks. i'd put the losses at 80/20. when india starts developing a so called "trade surplus", then what? india decides it doesnt want to be so obedient of amerika, media hypes up the indian surplus. tarif india? when does it end? india may be obedient now, but that doesnt guarantee it will always be obedient. there are too many factions, and india is too fragmented for it to be completely obedient of its western masters. culturally rich countries like china, india, iran, and turkey have a tendency of having their own thoughts every now and then. as far as japan goes, theyre only thriving because amerika allows them to thrive, and amerika only allows them to thrive because amerika needs japan to destabilize china. once china is out of the picture, it'd be interesting to see what japan's role will be then, or if it will even have a role

The US will win. China's stock markets are already down 27 to 35%, their lowest since 2010, effectively making Japan once again the second largest financial center in the world.

China simply has no leverage in this war because they already used to tax all imports 20 to 40% all along despite it being against the rules of the WTO. The US had no taxes until now so they have a lot of leverage.

China's middle class for what it is simply cannot replace the US market. By US standards of what constitutes 'middle class' there are no more than 20 million people falling into that category in China, similar to countries like France and Britain, in the US 140 million people are middle class, China simply has a lot more poor people but these can't afford to consume.

The worst decision China could have made as an answer to tariffs was to devaluate their currency even further which they did, giving credit to Trump's claims that China is a currency manipulator, but also digging that giant debt hole even further because China needs to import a lot of resources from abroad and it now costs them more to do so.

China is expected to enter a Japan-style stagnation, the methods used by the US to push it down this road are different but the consequences are expected to be the same or similar, only China as a society is much poorer and headed straight to the middle income trap (not even there yet) because of its massive debt.

It is a pretty good system for raising revenue depending on what your importing.

If you import luxury goods with tariffs and your own consumers are giving you revenue from the wealthy for an imported BMW 7 series made in Germany, then some poor or middle class guy gets to keep more money by not paying income taxes.

The problem in China is some of the imported items are for the poor and middle class, like pork, soy beans, chicken, etc and that drives up food cost and China has to collect more income tax from these guys to cover imposed tariffs. So they get hit with higher food prices and a lower paycheck.

When you feed 20 percent of the world with 9 percent of the world land and a lot is not usable for agriculture and water scarcity, mathematically your are screwed.

Trying to buy off countries and put countries in debt and using chinese labor in other countries instead of locals for projects is not a good way to get friends to feed you when you have no choice, bad policy will have to change.

the real advantage for china is the american electoral system. china has aggresively and almost selectively targeted the battleground states. democracies are vulnerable to his stategy whereas china is not. it will probably produce results. already trump has resulted to a farmers' bailout, essentially socialized farming. It does irritate me that republicans are against universal medicare
but not against socialized farming or increased mitlitary spending. The army is a socialist institution. a national health service does not ruin an economy but socialized farming does.

china does trade unfairly. tariffs are higher, companies have to take on a chinese partner who adds no value, intellectual property theft. so i must admit it is good to see them sweat a little. they have a lot more to lose. maybe they will be forced to open up a little more.

a long-term trade war will put china, the us and probably all of the west into a recession.

correct me if im wrong, but didnt the 0bama rejime start the pivot to asia. the chrump rejime's attack on china is only an extension of that. i doubt the obama rejime wanted foolish amerikans to get useless degrees. what he and his handlers were more interested in was getting foolish amerikans to subvert china, brain wash chinese, and collect intelijence. same thing that nixon, bush, regan, chrump, carter, and clinton wanted really. it's the same reason why amerikans are sent to many countries to "study". lets also not forget that the 0bama rejime launched a year long riot in hk in an attempt to lean on china. wonder how the us would respond to a watts riot that lasted an entire year? the 0bama rejime also launched a riot in xingjiang pretty much as soon as he took office. there, he earned his stripes as an inperialist. the 0bama rejime also pushed taiwan to be much more agresive towards the mainland. it was the 0bama rejime who chose cai yingwen as the head compradore in taiwan to steer tw in a radically anti chinese direction, once again, to lean on china. elsewhere, 0bama the inperialist also wrestled south sudan, sri lanka, and myanmar away from china. 0bama's inperialist accomplishments are too long to list. thats why us oligarks gave him a 2nd term. why would they give him that if he wasnt able to project the us ruling class interests? id say one of 0bama's biggest accomplishment according to the inperialist, would be wrestling the ukraine away from rusia. it was under the 0bama rejime that snipers were sent in to syria to initiate a civil war. 0bama also launched a war against libya. under the 0bama rejime, mh370 was taken down. as an inperialist, 0bama also oversaw japan's role, and position as the guard dog of china. think of all the prime ministers the 0bama rejime had to go through before getting to abe. it was also the 0bama rejime who overthrew hatoyama (the peace candidate), and replaced him with more agresive leaders like abe, once again to destabilize china, and lean on china

hippy. If you believe that idiot obama, actually did all this against China, you have more confidence in the lazy pot smoking piece of shit than I ever did. how could he do all this damage and get a Nobel Peace Prize and make blacks in America take a 50 percent drop in their net worth. you make this guy sound as bad as a neocon burning in hell now named John Mccain, i doubt the black savior between tokes of marijuana got half of this done. Hell even your own government made him use the back door to get off air force one when he came here.

When it comes to markets, we shouldn't underestimate China. It has a healthy luxury market, loved by top brands for keeping sales viable. Luxury consumption is in decline in the West.

As many people misunderstand, tariffs are levied on the consumers of foreign products. Supposedly to protect local businesses from competition. China has a huge luxury market. When it's exported goods are sold less, and they make less money, they will simply earn the difference back in tax hikes on foreign luxuries. If it gets extreme, they'll simply copy all the McDs and KFCs that are taxed out of business, with local knockoff chains.

Trump doesn't understand the first thing about trade. His trade advisor was found on amazon, where he was selling his scaremongering anti-China books. Competence will beat incompetence into the ground.

With all the ideological chest-thumping and trolling of authority figures, Xi Jinping is set to make more than just money, he will command respect for simply not falling into the same mudflinging as the rest of the world leaders.

ambivalentmace:

Trump has been doing business in China for over a decade and has complained about the unfair trade practices on you tube for 15 years, to say he knows nothing about it when he has raised hell about for years is just naive. The chinese screwed him over a coffee shop in macaw using his name and he lost in court  3 times over an 8 year period and the chinese bragged to his face that americans are dumb sob that can't do business. check " china thinks were stupid sob on you tube and you can see the video interview from 2007, this is personal and he has been planning this for a long time, you can even find a letter of protest he sent the commerce department under the black savior's reign over america in 2008 about unfair business practices.

Bill Clinton is president because bush screwed a billionaire named ross perot and trump is president because the american government screwed trump.

somebody needs to understand that pissing off billionaires with shitty attitudes and a chip on their shoulder is a VERY, VERY bad idea.

Oh, it's you, the "Obama black savior" guy. I always picture you watching Fox & Friends, believing every word when they call Obama a thin-skinned, narcissistic, racist traitor. When a white guy is on the Oval Office displaying those very qualities you believe Obama had, it's amazing how you manage to block out reality and stick to the narrative. It must be very taxing on your belief system, all this evidence piling onto your safe space like an avalanche. It must make you very angry. WRT your story about the Trump brand in China, it is a well-known one to me. Your golden-orange guy has indeed been butthurt about a copyrighted cafe chain started with the Trump name, and he's been losing appeals about it all the time, up until he became president, at which point the Chinese court ruled in his favour. But what does this say about the guy's business acumen? He's preoccupied with his name, splashing money on a petty grudge for 15 years. Is that wise? Seems like he lets himself get easily distracted by ego issues. I heard he also bought the copyright to Trump escort services in China, although he probably just wanted to prevent others from acquiring it. A bad joke president, and why do ppl like you not see that you should feel shame??

shame, why should i feel shame, i left when the black savior took the reigns, the american people get the government they deserve, the backlash, from corporatists screwing the middle class caused this, I don't condone what Trump is doing, I just understand why he is doing it and it can't be stopped.

All of this shame is nothing, if you kick the guy out, Pence will be much worse.

If Hillary had managed to win, the damage would have caused a backlash for someone even worse than Trump.

7 million voters for the black savior voted for Trump. maybe someone did not deliver hope and change, Trump is doing what he said he would do, good or bad, its amazing to see anybody do what they actually say in American politics.

Trump is a New Yorker who has had to do business with both parties and survive, he found a niche, play the race card, play the jobs card, and play the immigration fear card, both parties are just jealous that the so called experts did not figure out that this was a winning strategy and now they look like fools with severe butthurt, many states he had no support staff or ground game at all.

I don't know if running the country like a business is a good idea or if a New Yorker can actually run the country, but based on the lousy leaders from both parties we have had since Truman. what to hell do we have to loose, it was so bad, how could it get worse, remember they said america's best days were behind it and 1.2 percent gdp and 9 percent unemployment was the new norm and nothing could be done to raise gdp and lower unemployment. They all look like fools now because the these numbers are the best they have been in the history of the country and now people are asking question and elites are having to give real answers and not diatribe bullshit, If Trump dies tomorrow, he has made people ask questions that people never wanted to give a straight answer about and the press giving a rim job to hussein for 8 years was obvious even to progressives.

Escobar: Sun Tzu And The Art Of Fighting A Trade War

icnif77:

Authored by Pepe Escobar via The Asia Times,

It will be long, it will be nasty and Trump would be foolish to underestimate Xi and the resolve of China...

Imagine the Chinese leadership out of the public eye for nearly two weeks – virtually holed up, immersed in a secret debate. That is exactly what just happened at Beidaihe, the beach resort in eastern Hebei province.

While there might be James Bond-ish conspiracy theories out there for this annual ritual, there are no doubts about the key theme of discussions: The US-China trade war.

The second-largest world economy under President Xi Jinping is deep into the long march towards superpower status. The previous geopolitical and geoeconomic status quo is dead.

Xi has made it abundantly clear that for China to just become a “responsible stakeholder” in the post-Cold War US-controlled liberal international order is not enough.

It did not escape the notice of the senior leadership at Beidaihe of the change of direction by the US. President Donald Trump’s administration is taking a belligerent approach while the US National Security Strategy in December 2017 unmistakably labeled China a “revisionist power,” a strategic rival and for all practical purposes, from the Pentagon’s point of view, a top threat.

Instead, what the Beijing leadership identifies is what we could define, in Chinese culture terminology, as the “three threats.”

A threat to their foreign policy concept for the coming decades, such as the Belt and Road Initiative, and a threat to China’s own integration drive centered on the three strategic zones of the Greater Bay Area, the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei corridor and the Yangtze river delta. And, of course, a threat to the Chinese stock market.

State media is still grappling on how to deal with it. The People’s Daily has, politely, defined the Trump administration’s strategy as “engagement plus containment.”

Stocks, Yuan Jump On Report Of New US-China Trade Talks

Once again, 'hope' is alive,  as US equities surge higher on headlines claim Washington is seeking a new round of trade-talks with China (just two weeks after the last heralded round of trade talks amounted to a nothing-burger but prompted panic-buying in stocks).
