Q: Why all the 'security' on the metro?
Not sure whether it happens in all Chinese cities with a metro but in Beijing you have to put your bag throw a scan before getting on, at some stations they even have a thing that scans liquid. From the outside it looks like top notch security, but I rarely put my bag through - just walk past the 19yr old 'security guard' in the oversized coat like they arent even there. Not once have I been stopped. And I've noticed Chinese do this as well, so its not just that they can't be bothered with the laowai.
So whats the point? Provide these kids with jobs - if you can call it a job? Is it to deal with overcrowding on metro platforms (this would make sense to me), or is it just to provide a veneer of control?
Why indeed! It's only a bad joke if you ask me. I also ignore them and usually they ignore me as well, had only a few squeaking at me. But I haven't seen any Chinese doing this. Their meekness surprises me, because instead of dealing with overcrowding, security are causing it. In the Shenyang metro the pathways are narrowed down to force the crowd to pass the X-ray equipment, and to my utter annoyance they've even narrowed down the halls that lead toward the exit.
Some Chinese people feel the same though and one guy I talked to complained that there's no bodyscan. He could have carried explosives underneath his coat! So he deemed it not safe enough. But others just feel it's a waste of time. And as long as the streets are crowded with terrorists (people driving), so do I.
The City, metro, driving laws, banking security, visa's, foreigners, borders, packages, ID checks and whatever else is becoming more frequent due to the Chinese New approaching.
So basically, It's TOUCH UP & CLEAN UP time in China.. Happens every year..
they bought them during Olympics and the expo to gain a little bit "face", so what should they do with them now? ...got it?
I was once transporting a bunch of kitchen ware a friend had given me to take home to my new apartment so that we had some cutlery and crockery. I had a about 10 knives in the bag. When I went through the screen watching guy asked me if I had knives. I told him that I did, expecting him to confiscate them, but he didn't. He just told me I could go through.
I've also seen a few times where the person watching the screen is sleeping or not looking at the screen at all.
The 2 most worthless jobs in China: security guard and traffic police

we need some real 'Economics Major' to explain in layman's terms what the long-term effect of fake jobs is. I kinda get the idea that with a 1.3+ billion population that you (the govt.) need to create a lot of 'make-work' jobs,,, but I have always been curious as to where this road leads...... hmmmm
we have a fella,, looks to be in his late 50's,,, sits outside apartment door in a baggy security guard jacket 8 - 12 hours a day. likable enuf fella, but never seen him do a thing except sit and smoke. note- we have 'real' sec. guards in the lobby who patrol and open/shut the doors. this guy is not one of them.
