I am in the process of looking for another teaching position in Hangzhou. Problem is that there is very little teaching positions IN HANGZHOU, unless I want to work for a so called "training school" like EF, Wall Street or places like that.
All the colleges have moved out of the city. As in wayyyyyyyy out of the city. Went to a school yesterday, that although a beautiful place, was way out in the fucking middle of nowhere. From town it takes 45 minutes to get there. All these jobs seemingly are. It is either in some suburb or out in the sticks. Another company might want to place me in a high school, again, way the fk north of town, in the boonies. Not that there isn't schools in the damn city! I worked for a high school, way out in the middle of nowhere. I applied for another school last year, a job I really wanted, again, out in the middle of shit. Lots of aggrevation.
Is this like this in every city? A University or educational zone in the middle of nowhere? IF I get my work permit another year, I want a social life, and I dislike having to spend much time going to the market, or going shopping.

money.
It is cheaper to build a 30,000+ new university in the sticks where land is cheaper (and you could also probably build on contaminated land).
Forced purchase of land is easier outside cities as there are probably fewer officials that need bribing.
It is easier to isolate and control the students as they are not 'distracted' by shops and entertainment venues that are outside the campus, which are another source of revenue on campus.
Staff will be cheaper to hire also, as they won't be able to demand salaries for city apartments, also they can control the FT's more as they are unlikely to have their own transport.

'cause 'middle of nowhere' today will be filled in a heartbeat tomorrow, if you peek at the population growth (index) .
I fancy 'middle of nowhere' like Huachuan, 10 h by bus N of Harbin, 'capital-of-the-coldest' Province in the world.
It's called 'taiga' or 'tundra' in Ruski ....
Well it was like this in Zhengzhou. My first college was well outside the city (although it was one of the older ones - nearly 20 years old!). The distance wasn't too much of a problem though as there was less traffic where we were (the south), in the evenings the taxis got us back in about 20 minutes. My second college was near the centre, which is part of why i wanted to go there, but it was pretty old and shabby like all the city centre colleges.
Yup, it's like this in Shenyang too. Most of the universities are moving to the suburbs, especially to the north of the city, luckily for me. There are a couple left in the city but I wouldn't be surprised if they're not there for much longer.
Ummm... so they don't have to tear down blocks of apartments or offices???
I'm thinking this isn't really a smart question - not for a newly built university!
I presume you're (OP) referring to out west of HZ in the PingFeng Higher Education Zone... where there are about 6 universities, and good enough public transport. Each of those universities has a large oval, and HUGE main entrance... and, of course, lots of dorm buildings as well as the classroom buildings... trying to do that in the heart of the city would be really difficult, and very expensive!
Xiasha is only 15-20 mins by metro to the city.
I wonder where you're from... apparently, some city where you're at work within 15 mins or so....
If you want to be in the city, get a job in one of the city campuses... there's only about 10 to choose from! (or is it closer to 15 now? Or even more???)
