Q: Why are Chavs from England so Prevalent Here in China?
This will be a contentious question, but it is something that has been on my mind on and off for a while.
I am Canadian, and have met Brits all over Canada for years. All great, moderate and unpretentious people.
Since I started my life in China, every Brit I've encountered acts like China is a colony...rude, autocratic behavior; a sense of entitlement and the arrogance...my god, the arrogance! Americans are supposed to be the rude and patriotic denizens that rub America's greatness in other peoples' faces...but it's the Brits.
Now, it's almost always the males who do this. What gives? I've listened to (Chavs) British males drone on endlessly about their abilities and successes without a single modicum of ability to back up their claims. I also know that Chinese administrators fall for the 'superman' on paper resumes and will cover their own loss of face when they discover that they've actually hired 'sub-sub-subhuman'.
Americans, Canadians, Kiwis, Aussies and others will leave when Brits take over a school (because they insist on recruiting fellow Chavs and those who are willing to swallow their pride in order to partake of the short-tern financial and "face" awards for following a Captain Bligh)...but...why?
And, please, before the empty nationalistic diatribe, keep this in mind, "...have met Brits all over Canada for years. All great, moderate and unpretentious people."
So, Brits, what gives?
I have had a different experience. Most Brits have turned out to be good guys.
On the other hand the biggest arrogant dickheads I have met here have been Canadians. No offence Mr Sinobear, but I guess you'd agree too seeing as you want to secede.
Also much to my personal shame, Aussies who aren't complete fucktards are rare on the ground too.

I saw their attitudes, though, as a personal reflection/inflection rather than a representation of their nationality.
I've met Canadian "players"; con-men, drug dealers, and escapists of every nationality (thankfully, no pedophiles or murders yet)...but still, still and all, I've not encountered the level of arrogance put forth by British (I shall exclude Welsh {because no one comes from Wales}, Scots {'cause they're NOT, NOR EVER WILL THEY BE BRITS} [can you guess my heritage?]}, or Irish in this definition).
So, revisiting my question, I guess I should have just asked, why are chavs from England so prevalent here in China? Make it so!
I think, you should get T-shirt with 'ARGENTINA'

You'd sure enjoy some breaks, here and there.

Brits thinks everywhere are colonies. With possible exceptions of a few French speaking places like France.

De people from France are de hoiti-toiti dans la toilette people who have only brought rudeness to de forefront (which , I mentioned in another post that Chinese love France for the training opportunity to become the rudest people on earth).
You're obviously moving with the wrong type of Brits. As you mention schools/teachers then you must be mixing with Macdonalds teachers from the UK. I generally avoid British "English" teachers as most of them are full of s**t and think the sun shines out of their lilywhite asses.
If you want to find some great, moderate and unpretentious Brits then seek out the ones with regular jobs or businesses here.
By the way......I'm a Brit!

My condolences! I see why you've chosen 'Hotwater' as a handle seeing as yer g&^*&^awful country can't seem to produce a single tap to have properly controlled water temperature, or beer.
I mix with those outside of academia, I've met millionaires - self -made and old money, I've partied with government officials and governors (just forget that the two most official people I've ever met in China were both executed and a third is on his way).
I've met business owners and CEOs...my wife has worked for a plethora of engineers and managers from all corners of the earth...but it's always the same...Brits (again, males) portray the arrogance (NOT class or sophistication that supposedly comes with being of the gentry) far beyond their abilities.
Further to my original post, I've also met grads from MIT, Harvard and Yale...humble folks one and all. Oxford and Cambridge? Like vegans, you'll never hear the end of it!
Still my question remains, what makes those (mostly males) from the land of buggery so arrogant (except for Hotwater who is cool in my books)?

The company I work for sometimes has Cambridge students visit on a group tour. This is organised via the local UK consulate. The consulate is more than likely staffed by Cambridge graduates. Its a perpetuation of the class system of old. Contacts open doors, and a lifetime of not even having to look for doors must have an effect on them. Its the old boys network in action. But when these students graduate, they wont work for the company I work for. They will walk straight into an investment bank in HK, and then use your pension fund to buy the company I work for. The class system is still going strong in the UK.

Consulate staffed by Cambridge graduate? Last time I was at a British Consulate svent in GZ (admittedly in 2008!) the staff I spoke to were one cool British guy and two Australian lesbians!
I suspect it's the company., purely as I've not had such an experience with them. At least, not enough to single out a nationality.
I've heard of some very arrogant Brits, but I've also unfortunately met others from other countries with the same problems.
I've met 1 Harvard (I think... maybe 2). Complete wanker! That's how I know he went to Harvard... he actually wanted me to ask him which university he went to, and got all smug and arseholery about it!

The UK economy sucks at the moment, especially for the chav class, and so coming here is easier than getting a job back home. If they actually were as good as they thought they were, they'd have the nice paying job back home.

I'm trying to find out why those from England are far more arrogant than their English-speaking peers from elsewhere.
China was never a colony. Sure, there were concessions, and there was HK. "Won" by the East India Company I think.
I have never met a long term Brit here who behaves as you say. But I totally agree that they are here. Probably gap year students from the "good" universities. They are no different from the "expats" in Spain complaining about immigration to the UK.
HK is a different matter. I have met a few colonialists who live there.

Because one suffers while working in developing country instead in his home, so must show how great his home is.
Just taking a stab since I haven't come across Brits. I dunno, the most "arrogant" people are always either American, British, Chinese, or French. People coming from countries with claims of empire in their histories.
I thought "chavs" were uneducated juvenile delinquents chugging cheap cider and wearing track suits. I don't understand how they could get a job in China.

Actually, my point is the arrogance displayed by the majority of Brits that I've encountered. With further reflection, it may instead be the lack of modesty and/or bragging beyond one's proven ability.

Yeah Daphne is right Chavs are something specific. You can find chavs in thailand but you don't see true chavs here much. "Chavs" are what the UK has instead of "thugs". How many "thugs" do you see in China? What would they be doing here?
you're more describing pretentious yuppy types who don't have sexy yuppy jobs to allow them to get away with it.
And I would actually agree a little bit you see a lot of that from the younger brits you meet here. I get what you mean by saying some of them have this almost colonial kinda mind set assuming they can just show up here and find great opportunity. More so than americans or candaians.
