Q: Why are Chinese parents/grandparents so clueless when picking up up their kids from school?

It's chaos with double and triple parking, wrong side of the road, anything goes in the rabble.

It does force the traffic to slow down. Kids will only get hit at slow speed.

You forgot to add: fight like 90 to get your kid then stand in the middle of the walkway to praise/pamper/stuff the little dumpling. Pushing other peoples' kids out of the way. Trying to outdo the snacks and toys that other parents/grandparents bring. Asking the kids how their day was while checking the status of their online games on their mobile phones. And so on and so on and so on...

It's the "herd" or "stockyard" phenomenon.  Happens anywhere and everywhere you have animal (and that includes us) overpopulation.  From rats' mazes in science labs to overcrowded nightclubs and football stadia, standing-room-only trains, and... countries.

You don't need cars for that top happen. Outside my building is a pickup spot for busses to some of the local schools. In the morning you have the parents/grandparents there doing the same thing. Before the bus comes they are just talking to their fellow parents/grandparents, as soon as the bus is there, everyone tries to push their child in first. It's just maybe 5 kids per bus and the busses are full size 40-50 seat ones and at this point in their morning runs, they are pretty much empty. Why couldn't this sort of thing go down in an orderly way.

It's because here you have to pay for the kids education at an early age...

Scandinavian:

but if you pay, then you have a spot in the classroom, then there should be no need to try and push the kids into the building. Did you grandmother ever do that to you ?
