Q: Why are the Chinese Rock & Roll challenged?

Everything is pop crap or disco mixes.
Do the Chinese even know what real rock & roll is?
I am tired of drinking in disco's.  There is only one real live rock venue here and for the money I am lucky to hang there once a month....too much money.
Do you have rock & roll music in bars where you live in China?

Beijing has plenty rock venues, but they always mix all kinds of music. A lot of band are experimental/indie/hipster crap, but a few bands really stand out, and show you that there is hope for Chinese rock (even though the "gov'" tries to keep them as underground as possible, if not 6 feet under).
They are challenged because of the social condition in China, but on the rock scenes, the good bands DO know what they're doing and getting into, and seem to play only out of pleasure, not for popularism.

I agree with Mr_Spoon. Beijing is the place to be in China if you're into rock n' roll. Sure, the scene is a far cry from the West, but one has to remember that China only started having a rock music scene in the 80's. Nowadays, live music venues are popping up across the country and more and more kids are starting to pick up guitars and follow dreams of rock stardom. There are many problems plaguing the scene however, and this can't be outlined mre clearly  than in the China Daily article by Mu Qian about the closure of Beijing's most famous live music venue D22.

they havent been able to get the rock n roll mentality that the US and UK has. There has always been a bit of rebellion behind rock n roll, and that isnt as common here on an individual (or national) level as it is in the West.

Protesting "the man" also contributed a lot during our "cultural revolution" (which was an entirely different thing here). Think about Ohio - CSNY calling attention to the Kent State massacre or Rage's Killing in the Name Of... that sort of protest isnt in the pop culture in China.

And dont forget the drugs!! Purple Haze, Snowblind Friend, The Wall, Dazed and Confused or most of the songs by The Doors are all good examples.

All the above is for all things associated with rock n roll and its culture.

But more about the music. Rock n Roll developed into its own genre, but its main influence was the blues, which originated in the US over a hundred years ago. You can really see this is the styles of Hendrix, Led Zeppelin, The Doors. Or the influence of country/americana in the likes of Buddy Holly or Crosby Still Nash and Young.

All the musical influences which rock developed from are inheritantly western, as well as the subject matter and angst that goes along with it.

So, For those about to rock... we salute you!!!

bike-gypsy, good answer above.

I somehow think that the people on the P*litb*ro who have a say in cultural matters here in China view rock-n-roll as a somewhat degenerate, Western pseuod-art form.  This is not my personal opinion but an opinion that I have heard bantered about.  Accordingly, it is placed on a rather "tight leash" here -- allowed but only to a certain degree and then I believe not allowed past that degree.  This is just conjecture on my part.

I love to watch Chinese people clapping when they are watching a singer or listening to music. Where's the rhythm? Just random clapping actions not at all in sync with the tune.

Ya! Chinese need discover rythm, before they can even think about rock and roll!

Its all about knowing where to look. Rock music can hard to find anywhere in the world. Try Rock in China or the Metal Travel guide always worked for me. Normally most rock Bars are located in some dark back alley, where nobody goes, or at least they are in Europe. I kind of got use to finding bars that nobody else knows about. After growing up with listening to Black Metal, you kind of get used to finding places that nobody else knows exists.

Like Derek said, most or many Chinese people have no rhythm. Line dancing would do well here, though I'd hate to see it.

A: "... through ..."?  Only "through" comes to mind is "Shenzhen agent can connect you with an employer, who's authorized to hire waigouren ... and can sponsor Z visa." It's not like every 10th person you meet in Shenzhen's hood can sponsor work visa ...  The only way to change from student to labourer visa is just a regular way by: 1. Finding an employer, who'll apply for an Invitation letter; 2. Exit China and apply for Z visa in your home country's Chinese embassy; 3. Enter China in 30-days after Z visa was stamped into your travelling instrument ...As I am aware, you won't be able to switch to Working permit by remaining in China....,so make ready for a return to your home .... -- icnif77
