Like the surfing speed, the up/down transfer rates given by the Chinese service providers are only local based up/down transfer rates.

Once a complain that I could never reach the 2 Mbps, and the technician from China Telecom told me that the rate is only for local surfing (meaning Shanghai in my case). When websites start to be hosted outside Shanghai, the rate may vary....

One of the main reasons for this (and also the reason why you can't get a fixed IP) is that the government does not want anti-government/illegal websites being hosted on people's home machines where it is harder to track down.

Of course, that is becoming old-school thinking as I know that 10MB is now available in Guangzhou at least.  Most other places still have a 2MB cap though.

Officially in Nanning you can get 4mb, 8mb and 12mb (although they admit that the 12 only actually delivers 10). However as said previously that only applies locally as soon as you go outside China that slows down.

I use www.speedtest.net to check my speeds and while we pay for 8 the most we actually get is 6 and I have seen it as slow as 0.06! (When I switch servers on my vpn). Heck even within China the most I've seen is 7 and usually around 5.

It depends what you consider to be slow.

My internet in New Zealand has nothing on the speed I get 9 days out of 10 here. I'm with China Unicom on a 6MB plan but it's rare that I test over 4, but considering it was a promotion where I only paid for 4, I consider the times over 4 a bonus. But that said, I stream videos without waiting, and am happy to download my files at 300-500kb/s, compared to when I was at home, downloads were lucky to get to 200kb/s.

Because China great firewall poisons the internet traffic. Damn! It's very hard to access the email, It's almost impossible to do financial trading, and I lost a lot of important online courses in Youtube. Banning the internet is definitely make us more stupid!

How about 340 million people jamming up the band width compounded by PSB security redirects to super slow portals and deliberate throttling of Google users. Did I miss something?
