Q: why are most of chinese jealous of their foreign co-workers?
I went to a schoo in Ningbo last year to visit my friend...i saw how efficient he is in his work but still some of chinese who work with him wants him to be out of that event.....
The Chinese are no more or less prone to jealousy than any other nationality. Some will be happy you are different, some will be jealous, other's won't care and some people will shift from one viewpoint to another over time.
Foreigners usually make more money and do things differently than them. That kind of stuff breeds jealousy. Even if the foreigner is a totally awesome person there will always be Chinese people in the workplace who don't like them for whatever reason.
i think there is a lot of jealousy here but maybe it's justified.
foreigners get paid more money to come here to work. unless you are a transfer from a company, you are probably not the top 50% in your field in your home country. ex: i dont believe many qualified teachers who are at the top of their profession will come here. china pulls mostly from the bottom 50% or from people who arent even qualified to be a teacher in their home country. (does not mean they arent good teachers or will not do a good job) but most are arrogant and treat the local population like crap. these people arent anything special in their own countries but come here and want to act like they know more about running a chinese university than the workers who have been here for 20 years. they dont talk to co-workers or students , they only stay in their rooms or only want to talk to other foreigners. i'll give you an example , where i used to work , there was a local whose job it was to sign in guest to our building. the other foreign teachers would send him to the store for them, leave their garbage right outside their door intstead of bringing it downstairs and out to the trash bin. they brought dogs into the building and would just put them out of their apartments but not let them out of the building, so the dogs would have no choice but to do their business in the hallway and the poor guy would have to clean it up. i felt sorry for the guy he was a nice guy, but chinese need to learn to stand up for themselves. foreigners will act offended if you tell them to take their trash out themselves, or to walk 5 minutes to the store themselves, but they at the same time know no one in their home country would tolerate their nonsense.
add to the fact that locals adopt the mentality that "1 foreigner is the exact same as all foreigners"
the other reasons are silly, they are jealous because the women here can have more "fun" with a foreigner than a local guy. or foreigners have a take no shAt attitude and arent afraid to tell the boss "no"
in the end if usa started importing mexicans and giving them just 2/3 of what they would pay americans, americans would grab their guns and go to war ![]()
derek:
Regarding your comment that "1 foreigner is exactly the same as another foreigner" I had a university tell me yesterday that they wouldn't hire me because.. since I am now married I will cause trouble....seems they had a married foreigner working there last term and there were problems so obviously it stands to reason that since we are all the same...I will cause trouble too. There's that!
What CrimoChina said - except without the horror stories of the bad example, and with the example of the good ones...
Yeah, we get paid 2-3 times what Chinese teachers do (or more), with better benefits get treated better by management (usually), more 'perks', will less qualifications and experience. We are often treated as if we know better (and, honestly and obviously, when it comes to the English language, of course we do!), we had a better education, because it came via a better education system. And, all this with having to do less work.
Many Chinese are cheap - they want to get the best, and pay nothing for it (unless, of course, they're the new rich - in which case they'll throw their money - and assumed power - all over the place to try to imp;ress others, and big note themselves!) This mentality goes through to attitudes about work.... do the least work for the most pay - and don't give a shAt.... very little self-respect. Many foreigners have a very different attitude... it may not be "always do your best", but will at least put in a decent amount of effort (especially since the OP mentioned this teacher being efficient). Quite simply, this teacher makes the other teachers look bad!!!
And, as also suggested - A=A... one foreigner is the same as any other foreigner.
Not that it would matter... there would be no acceptable foreigner working there... good, bad, indifferent, there would always be some jealousy and a desire to remove him or her...
Oh, it also depends on the school! I've been lucky, and the one's I"ve taught at have been good! But I know the stories.....
everyone speak so much here, i opinion only have two reasons:
the foreigner get good salary more easily than chinese
the foreigner man get girls more easily than chinese man![]()
I've always found my Chinese co-workers to be very nice and pretty laid back. Maybe that's cause they are also paid well?
