Expensive, noisy, sucky sound, and even when willing to pay to go to the movie theater, they sometimes wont sell you the ticket if they think that there are not enough people.

GuilinRaf:

It is almost as if they are begging the public to download movies instead of watching  them in the theater.

Because movie theaters come from the West. Like everything Western in China, it's way overpriced for its quality, and makes the moviegoers feel like they are in luxury and winning face because they've spent half their salary to go watch 90's movie remakes in 3D.

Cinema tickets can go as low as 25 rmb per person for the latest movie when buying on the internet. You often have to add 10-15 Yuan to that while in the cinema if you're going to see an IMAX or 3D movie but it's still ridiculously cheap.

Tickets can go around 100-150 per person when you buy them inside theaters though...

It's all about knowing where to look.

As TheWired said before, you will see a huge difference on the price if you buy through "Groupon style" Chinese sites or if you get a membership card for a cinema.

Never buy a ticked directly at the cinema , you will be paying at least twice the "real" price

Scandinavian:

also, we got some "Movie Coins" from ICBC, they work just liek a bus pass, you prepay and then you can go beep them, although only half the cinemas accept them. Using the coin a ticket is then 10RMB
