Q: Why are there no Corvettes In China?

I have seen just about every car possible in China - except Corvettes.  What's up with this?

there is also no Model-Ts

Our parking basement has Ferraris, Bentleys, Porsches etc, but pretty much no American cars. All the exotics are European.

Why would you have a Corvette if you can get a 911 ?   A Corvette works in the US, but looks silly anywhere else.

you would think government motors or general motors would market corvettes here, they got plenty of money from the american taxpayers to spend in china and move most of their business and production to asia. a new 3 billion dollar plant is being built as i write, makes you wonder about the marketing, the corvette is a hard ride though, not sure the roads here would be very accommodating to the suspension system.

Nessquick:

Exactly, Corvette is soo different. It is not this Chevy shopping bag or "boss car" we see here everyday.

if i recall right, they don't even use spring suspensions, but the hard list based frame, which is so difficult to handle in the corners, and if you do not know how the play with the gas pedal ... God with you...

yes, sold at a loss for the taxpayers, but it was the good intentions that count, not the results, especially when you using other peoples money for your cause.

Too many bends in the roads ?

Hey. Only joking. Don't flame me.

ScotsAlan:

Joking aside. Here you go.

From article ....... While the Stingray will have a base price of $51,995 in the United States, import taxes will jack that price in China up to 1.5 million yuan or $245,000 in U.S. dollars.

Just think, you could buy four Corvettes in the States for the price of one in China! Unfortunately, Chevrolet won’t be the one making the big profit on the car; the government in China will. It’s interesting, though, that at even with the huge tax, the Corvette – as it is in the U.S. – is still a relative bargain, considering that a Maserati GranTurismo goes anywhere from $327,000 to around $400,000 over there.

ScotsAlan:

Yeah. I can't see it doing too well here.  But I suppose it all depends on how they sell/ market it.

The selling price here will put it in the same market as BMW's 5 series, or Range Rover etc. These are desired cars that sell in volume so it makes investment in dealerships worthwhile.  I can't see how Corvette can compete with that. Not enough profit per unit I suspect.

I reckon the people who have that sort of money to spend on a sports car will probably dig a bit deeper into their pockets and go buy a Porsche or Ferrari.

@Ness. The dealers might also be scoring big on this. Ranger Rovers are marked up by a huge amount because driving a Ranger Rover carries so much face, and until the Ranger Rover factory is up and running in China, they are in kind of short supply.

Those who write that Corvettes cannot handle holes in the road do have a fair point http://nyti.ms/1fi1NVz
