Q: Why are there no multi-storey car parks in China?
We call them "parking garages" where I'm from but that term is pretty vague I guess, so I went with the British name instead.
Granted I haven't been to every major Chinese city, but in the ones I've visited, I've never seen a major parking garage. At best, a tall building will have 3-5 below ground levels for parking, which is not nearly enough for the number of cars in use.
I don't get why these aren't in wider use here. Surely it must be more cost effective to build one 20 floor parking structure than to enforce parking in the entire surrounding area? I'm getting really tired of weaving in and out of cars parked on sidewalks or on the grass in residential areas. Not to mention it's an eyesore.
Is there something I'm missing here?

I have been to multi-storey car parks in Shenzhen, Changsha, Guangzhou and I think one is being built by the 100000sqr/mtr shopping center down the road.

I meant more like this, actually. It's one of my favorite buildings in Chicago.

I don't think I've ever seen above ground car parks, but also, architecture that hasn't been drawn just with a ruler is rare in China, 99.999% of all buildings are ugly or boring at best, anesthetics nonexistent, I doubt anyone in China would ever see it make sense to build nice buildings for parking cars.
I heard some of them are underground. Many are under large buildings or housing complexes. I guess it makes sense since housing is way too expensive here.
It has to be the city you are living in. The places in the capital city have many many multi story car parks.
chinese people can't drive at ground level. so having them drive above ground would be dangerous for the pedestrians on the street (raining cars). so they build parking garages below ground (much safer that way)
We parked in one in Chengdu that was a giant elevator. You drove the car into the parking spot on the ground floor, and it got lifted up mechanically. It was 5-6 levels of parking like this. It was all indoors.
